Boland lock in Gavin Kaplan with new three-year contract extension

Gavin Kaplan has committed his immediate future to Boland, signing a new three-year contract with the Paarl-based provincial team.

Kaplan has had two fruitful seasons with Boland since making the move down the N1 from Western Province in 2024.

The 28-year-old was the leading run-scorer in Division 1 of the domestic first-class campaign in South Africa this past season, hitting 903 runs in 13 innings that included four centuries and a fifty, at an average of more than 82.

In his first season with Boland, Kaplan struck 474 runs in 11 innings – averaging more than 43 with two hundreds and a fifty.

“Kaplan will be the rock on which we build our batting unit,” said Boland Cricket CEO James Fortuin.

Boland lost out in a Super Over to the Warriors in the 2025-2026 CSA T20 final, while they finished fifth in the One-Day Cup.

They made a fast start in the 4-Day competition, but eventually ended fourth as the Lions walked away as champions after beating the Warriors in the final at the Wanderers.

Reflecting on the past season, Fortuin added: “We are quite happy with how things panned out overall, still a work in progress.

“Remember, we don’t have the historic infrastructure and player pools like the other established unions have.

“Not to use that as an excuse, it is an opportunity for us to work harder and smarter to establish ourselves to be consistently as one of the top three unions in the country.

“Next season will hold different challenges, but we will set ourselves up to meet and exceed those challenges.”
