Liam Pitchford to team up with Sam Walker in Bundesliga

Liam Pitchford will be teaming up with Sam Walker in Germany next season after signing for Bundesliga club Zugbrucke Grenzau.

Pitchford has been with Pontoise Cergy in the French league in the past couple of seasons but has agreed to move back to Germany, where he previously played for Liebherr Ochsenhausen, for 2026/27.

Pitchford, who is currently recovering from hip surgery, said: “I was contacted by a few clubs in January. At that point, I was still on crutches and wasn’t sure where I was at and if I was going to be playing league next season.

“Then I started to do my rehab and Grenzau came to me and gave me a proposition. I know the club as I played in the Bundesliga for six years, and I spoke to Sam a lot. I was obviously feeling a lot better in my rehab and in my position at that stage.

“The goal is to get to the LA Olympics . . . I spoke to Carlo (Agnello, National Coach) and we decided it was a good opportunity to play in the Bundesliga and to get good matches.

“I probably won’t be able to play every match as I need to take care of my hip and play more WTT events than I would usually play, to get my ranking back up. I want to play as much as I can.

“It will be good to play alongside Sam, we’ve not played a club level together before, so that will be nice.

“I’m looking forward to it.”
