A body language expert has identified the biggest differences in Tyson Fury’s ‘emotions’ ahead of his comeback fight compared to his last three appearances in the ring.
Tyson Fury returns to action on Saturday, April 11, where he takes on Arslanbek Makhmudov in search of a first boxing win since October 2023.
But body language expert, Dr. Beth Dawson, has claimed that the ‘Gypsy King’ is “managing his emotions” to signal a more “suppressed” figure compared to his usual “free-flowing” character.
Speaking exclusively to 247Bet ahead of this weekend’s heavyweight clash, Dr. Beth Dawson specified that Tyson Fury was “holding himself in” during the press conference for the Arslanbek Makhmudov fight, with a “stiffer” posture and “reduced” movements coupled with “lip clenching” and “tension in the jaw” indicating that Tyson Fury is “containing his confidence” as he feels the pressure of this fight.
Analyzing Tyson Fury’s body language ahead of the Arslanbek Makhmudov fight, she said:
“The first thing that stands out about Tyson Fury’s body language ahead of the Arslanbek Makhmudov fight is how still and contained he is. It looks like he is holding himself in.
“He is not behaving in his usual open, free-flowing way. Instead, he is containing himself, showing measured behavior, choosing when to react, and keeping control over what he reveals.
“Fury is clearly taking the situation very seriously and choosing control over performance. We can see that in his posture, which is stiffer than usual. He is not taking up space in the same expansive way, and his movements are reduced.”
“His mouth is closed with the lips pursed and slightly lifted, which can look like a faint smile at first glance, but it is more likely suppression. Lip pursing often appears when someone is considering how to respond, suppressing a stronger emotional reaction.”
Comparing Tyson Fury’s body language to his last time out against Oleksandr Usyk, she said:
“In the Makhmudov press conference, Fury is actively regulating visible emotion. His face is alive with micro-activity. He suppresses smiles, clenches his lips, lifts his chin, and raises his eyebrows. The emotion is clearly present, but it is being managed.
“When he prepared to face Oleksandr Usyk for a second time, his face and body appeared quieter. He doesn’t suppress his emotions. He is simply not expressing them. The overall impression is not of containment, but of inward focus. This distinction is significant.
“Taken together, the difference can be summarized as Fury managing his emotional performance ahead of one fight, while reducing his emotional performance in another. In the Makhmudov press conference, Fury is managing performance and is feeling confident about the fight. While in the Usyk press conference, he is reducing performance and feeling less confident, but trying to hide it.”
Dr. Beth Dawson also commented on how Tyson Fury’s body language was different ahead of his most recent victory in the ring, against Francis Ngannou, in October 2023. She said:
“Ahead of the Francis Ngannou fight, Tyson Fury was at his most comfortable, expressive, and dominant.
“Against Ngannou, Fury displays expansion of his emotions rather than containment. He laughs openly, uses larger gestures, and aligns his voice with his body. This creates a strong sense of ease and control, suggesting that he felt confident in the matchup and able to dictate the tone. He uses humor, energy, and presence to command attention rather than manage himself.
“Compared to his later opponents, there is little sign of internal processing or restraint. He is clearly taking Makhmudov more seriously, as he did with Usyk.”
