The Canucks’ Toughest Draft Choice in Years

The Canucks’ Toughest Draft Choice in Years

If the Vancouver Canucks end up with the No. 1 pick, they’ll have a fun headache. It comes down to Ivar Stenberg or Gavin McKenna. Both guys are just under 6 feet; both are talented left wings, and both bring similar buzz — but they’re different flavours. Here’s a no-nonsense take on who fits Vancouver best.

A Review of Both Stenberg and McKenna

Ivar Stenberg — the Swedish spark plug

Stenberg (5-11, 183) comes out of Frölunda in the SHL, and that matters. He’s already been playing regular minutes against grown men in one of Europe’s best leagues and producing. What you notice first is his skating: that first-step quickness and balance that lets him dart into space and either make plays or finish chances.

He’s competitive, doesn’t back down, and plays a pro schedule now — so the transition to the NHL is less of a theory and more of a reality.

Upside: a dynamic gap-skater who can create offence off the rush and play in tougher minutes sooner than expected.
Risk: not huge, so physical durability and finishing at the NHL level are the questions.
Comparable: they throw out Tim Stützle as a frame — a high-skill playmaker with wheels and a nose for danger.

Gavin McKenna has been on fire with Penn State University.

Gavin McKenna — the college control artist

McKenna (5-11, 170) lit up Penn State in the NCAA. His 51 points in 35 games are a strong stat line. His hockey IQ is what gets scouts drooling: puck retrievals, zone entries, making plays under pressure, and running power plays. He dictates play; you can see him control the attack.

The NCAA route proves he can ramp up physically and mentally through a season and dominate at his level, which bodes well for development.

Upside: elite playmaking instincts, smooth skating, and the kind of decision-making that translates into quarterbacking lines and power plays.
Risk: lighter guy for now — will need strength and has to prove he can handle pro forechecks and NHL speed consistently.
Comparable: the Patrick Kane-ish tag gets tossed around — think slick, cerebral offensive creator.

So, Who Should the Canucks Pick?

It’s basically a fit question. Does Vancouver want a pro-ready, high-energy winger who can step into NHL minutes quickly and bring immediate impact? Take Stenberg. He’s closer to being NHL-tested and brings that half-step burst that can jump-start a top-six line from day one.

Want a long-term offensive architect who can grow into a true top-line playmaker and PP driver? Then McKenna is the pick. He may need a bit more bulk and seasoning, but his IQ and puck control could make him a special creator for years to come.

My lean: In Vancouver’s current timeline, they are trying to win now but also build sustainably. Stenberg slightly edges it out because he’s got pro minutes in a real league and can help sooner. But if the Canucks are thinking upside and ceiling above immediate impact, McKenna’s the sexy project.

Either way, both are exciting, and both would give the Canucks a real jolt.
