Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice is known for his candour and he provided a scouting report on a person of interest within the Toronto Maple Leafs ecosystem.
As the Maple Leafs begin their search for a new president of hockey operations and/or general manager, Panthers assistant general manager Sunny Mehta has emerged as a leading candidate. Toronto has received permission to interview the analytics-minded candidate, who will also be interviewing with the New Jersey Devils. Ahead of Saturday’s game, Maurice provided a brief scouting report on Mehta.
“My experience in Florida with all of Bill (Zito’s) group has been fantastic. We have two tiers of players that all of them have brought in. Sunny’s fantastic with analytics and his ability to articulate it to coaches, that easy conversation. We can ask questions, we get answers and explanations back,” Maurice said prior to Saturday’s game. “Brett Peterson and Gregory Campbell are part of that group. Brought in guys from maybe outside that weren’t flourishing, where they were and have become stars or part of our core.”
Florida’s pro scouting has been outstanding over the past five years, identifying players that were cast-off from other teams and incorporating them into its system. It’s been a primary reason why the Panthers repeated as Stanley Cup champions, along with a 1-2-2 system run to perfection under Maurice’s supervision.
Both the Panthers and the Maple Leafs will miss the playoffs this season, but there’s a much calmer tenor coming from the defending champions. Florida suffered several injuries this season, including a season-ending knee injury to Aleksander Barkov during training camp. As a result, the Panthers effectively punted on the year and will reclaim a top-10 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, while the Maple Leafs are desperately angling to recoup a top-five protected pick, or else it will convert to the Boston Bruins.
It’s the players who are responsible for lifting the Cup, but Mehta, Peterson and the Panthers’ brain trust have emerged as a model to follow. Maurice has given Mehta his endorsement, another vote of confidence for the Panthers’ executive as a top candidate for the Maple Leafs.
