Blue Jays Facing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Decision After Unfortunate News

The Toronto Blue Jays return to Rogers Centre on Sunday with a chance to take the series against the Tampa Bay Rays, but they will have to do it after losing one of their most important lineup pieces in Saturday’s setback. Toronto dropped the middle game of the series 4-7 after George Springer exited early with a toe injury.

Springer’s injury came in the third inning Saturday when he fouled a pitch off his left foot and immediately showed discomfort in the batter’s box. He stayed in long enough to finish the at-bat but was later removed, and postgame imaging confirmed a fracture in his left big toe.

Manager John Schneider said afterward that the club feared a small fracture as soon as the initial scans came back, and the diagnosis was serious enough for Toronto to move quickly with a roster replacement.

The Blue Jays have now placed Springer on the injured list, with Eloy Jimenez recalled to take his place on the active roster. Jimenez gives Toronto another power bat and is expected to be part of the immediate solution at designated hitter, where his offensive upside can help offset some of Springer’s lost production. While he is not a direct replacement stylistically, his bat gives the Blue Jays a middle-order option capable of changing games with one swing.

But Jimenez is only part of the equation, and Springer’s absence could now create a larger role for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. As Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith noted, Toronto also has the flexibility to rotate Guerrero Jr., Jesus Sanchez and eventually Addison Barger through the DH spot while Springer is sidelined.

Guerrero remains the anchor of the Blue Jays’ offense, and regular DH days would allow Schneider to reduce physical wear on his star first baseman without taking his bat out of the lineup. A hitter of his caliber becomes even more valuable in that setup because the Blue Jays lose nothing offensively while preserving his legs over a long season.

Sunday’s finale against Tampa Bay now becomes the first test of how Toronto intends to handle that balance. Jimenez is likely to see immediate DH at-bats, but Guerrero’s usage will be one of the key decisions on Schneider’s lineup card moving forward.
