After finishing runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Carlos Alcaraz is getting right back in action this week in Barcelona. It’s another busy week on the calendar, as both Barcelona and Munich are ATP 500-level events. Among those taking the court are Alcaraz, Lorenzo Musetti, Alex de Minaur, Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, and Joao Fonseca.
It’s time to break down a pair of stacked draws and make predictions as the European clay-court swing continues.
Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell
Where: Barcelona, Spain
Surface: Clay
Points: 500
Prize money: 2,950,310 Euros
Top seed: Carlos Alcaraz
2025 champion: Holger Rune (not playing)
Draw analysis: Alcaraz will be looking to bounce back from his loss to Sinner, but his draw in Barcelona is not an easy one. The top half of the bracket is loaded, starting with the Spaniard’s potential second-round showdown against Tomas Machac. Andrey Rublev also finds himself in that quarter, while De Minaur and Jack Draper are possible semifinal opponents for Alcaraz.
Monte-Carlo semifinalist Valentin Vacherot withdrew, after which Arthur Fils took over the Monegasque’s spot in the bracket as the No. 9 seed. A Musetti vs. Fils quarterfinal showdown could be in the cards, but the Italian remains a major question mark as he continues his comeback from a leg injury. Musetti has not won a match since retiring against Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open. Stan Wawrinka, Rafael Jodar, Corentin Moutet, Terence Atmane, Martin Landaluce, and Tomas Martin Etcheverry are among the unseeded entrants who could make some noise in Barcelona.
Quarterfinal predictions: Carlos Alcaraz over Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur over Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Rafael Jodar over Cameron Norrie, and Arthur Fils over Corentin Moutet
Semifinals: Alcaraz over De Minaur and Fils over Jodar
Final: Alcaraz over Fils
BMW Open
Where: Munich, Germany
Surface: Clay
Points: 500
Prize money: 2,561,110 Euros
Top seed: Alexander Zverev
Defending champion: Alexander Zverev
Draw analysis: Can anyone stop Zverev from snagging a second consecutive Munich title? Miomir Kecmanovic will get the first crack at it, and their head-to-head history has been quite competitive. It is all tied up 2-2 after Kecmanovic pulled off a 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(4) upset just a couple of months ago in Acapulco. Three of their four meetings have required a final set. The German’s possible path to the final could also include Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinals and either Flavio Cobolli or Luciano Darderi in the semis.
The bottom half of draw is much tougher — especially in terms of depth. Shelton and Alexander Bublik headline the seeded contingent, while unseeded competitors include Fonseca, Denis Shapovalov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Fabian Marozan, Alex Michelsen, and Alexander Blockx. The winner of Shapovalov vs. Tallon Griekspoor will face the winner of Tsitsipas vs. Marozsan in round two.
Quarterfinal predictions: Alexander Zverev over Francisco Cerundolo, Flavio Cobolli over Luciano Darderi, Alexander Bublik over Denis Shapovalov, and Joao Fonseca over Alexader Blockx
Semifinals: Cobolli over Zverev and Fonseca over Bublik
Final: Fonseca over Cobolli
