Great Britain started their men’s World Championship Division II Group A with a dramatic 5-4 victory over hosts Romania in Târgu Secuiesc.
GB were leading 4-1 at the second intermission but Romania scored three goals in eight third-period minutes, before Joel Meyers scored the winner with just 58 seconds remaining.
Harry Thomas started between the pipes with Max Van Mullem as back-up.
GB raced into a three-goal lead as Ruben Terry gave GB the lead (02:30) and Ricards Misins scored at 04:10 and 06:34 (powerplay).
Adrian Casaneanu reduced the arrears for the hosts (18:51) to ensure just a two-goal deficit at the first intermission.
Daragh Spawforth made it 4-1 at 31:58 and GB looked in control going into the third session.
But Romania had other ideas and roared back with goals from David Janos (46:32), Tudor Bolocan (50:27) and Huba Szabo (54:06).
There was still drama to follow as GB secured the three points when Spawforth and Ethan Lock set-up Meyers to bury the game-winner (59:02).
GB are back in action tomorrow (Monday 13th April) against China at 16:00 (14:00 BST).
