It has been an history week in the lacrosse space, both in terms of milestones as well as game results. We saw the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the girls’ game in the U.S., a coach getting her 900th win, and we saw an absolute firecracker of a game with Darien (Conn.) beating South Huntington St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) in double overtime.
Lutherville Maryvale Prep (Md.), led by senior attacker Cayden Reese, now heads our list, but the Lions will have the balance of a very unpredictable IAAM schedule. The league is the nation’s best, and I think any one of five teams could hoist the IAAM Flight “A” Championship at the end of the season.
1. Lutherville Maryvale Prep (Md.) 11-0
The Lions won a major interstate game over Manheim (Pa.) Township over the weekend by a 19-4 count; Maryvale plays Brooklandville St. Paul’s School for Girls (Md.) tomorrow and Glenelg (Md.) Country School on Friday
2. Manchester (Md.) Valley 6-0
The Mustangs travel to Sykesville South Carroll (Md.) tomorrow then host Westminster (Md.) Thursday; these are going to be great challenges
3. Darien (Conn.) 3-0
The Blue Wave moved out to a 7-4 lead over St. Anthony’s and won it in overtime; they have a pair of enormous contests this week against Garden City (N.Y.) and Wilton (Conn.) before traveling to Brooklandville St. Paul’s School for Girls (Md.) at high noon Saturday
4. South Huntington St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) 4-1
The Friars, for all their athleticism and skill, showed tremendous heart and grit in coming back from four goals down against Darien (Conn.) even while playing short most of the second half because of a fourth team yellow
5. Tredyffrin Conestoga (Pa.) 9-0
The Pioneers managed a clean sweep of their local rivals last week and will take on a good Radnor Archbishop Carroll (Pa.) team on Saturday afternoon
6. Garden City (N.Y.) 7-0
This team is jelling at the right time; they will take on Darien (Conn.) today and Wantagh (N.Y.) on Friday
7. Philadelphia Penn Charter (Pa.) 10-2
The Quakers may be the best team you haven’t heard much from thus far; while there are a bunch of other PAISAA teams in the mix for the postseason, this team is playing extremely well after two early defeats
8. Alexandria St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (Va.) 13-0
The Saints, after all the fanfare surrounding Kathy Jenkins’ 900th coaching win, swept its Spring Fling games with Chantilly Paul VI (Va.) and Willamette Loyola Academy (Ill.). Thursday will come a stern test with Charlottesville St. Anne’s Belfield (Va.)
9. Ridgewood (N.J.) 5-0
The Maroons have a labyrinth of a week, with Chatham (N.J.) today, Summit (N.J.) Thursday, and Greenwich (Conn.) Sacred Heart on Saturday
10. Nyack (N.Y.) 2-0
The Indians have 10-goalled their first two opponents; a Saturday match at Wilton (Conn.) awaits
Who’s out: Severn Archbishop Spalding (Md.) 10-7 loss to Brooklandville St. Paul’s School for Girls (Md.); Newtown Square Episcopal Academy (Pa.) 9-7 loss to Greenwich Sacred Heart (Conn.); Olney Good Counsel (Md.) 9-8 loss to Charlotteville St. Anne’s Belfield (Va.)
And bear in mind: Atherton Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.) 9-0, Highlands Ranch Valor Christian (Colo.) 7-2, Greenwich Sacred Heart (Conn.) 3-2, Delray American Heritage (Fla.) 14-1, Orlando Lake Highland Prep (Fla.) 14-2, Cumming West Forsyth (Ga.) 12-0, Severn Archbishop Spalding (Md.) 7-1, Olney Good Counsel (Md.) 9-1, Annapolis St. Mary’s (Md.) 9-2, Concord-Carlisle (Mass.) 4-0, Moorestown (N.J.) 4-0, Sayville (N.Y.) 6-0, Irondequoit (N.Y.) 4-0, Villanova Academy of Notre Dame de Namur (Pa.) 7-3, Rosemont Agnes Irwin (Pa.) 6-2, Newtown Square Episcopal Academy (Pa.) 8-2, Charlottesville St. Anne’s Belfield (Va.) 9-4
