The departure of Mike Ashley meant the return of Wor Flags to matches, as they ended their boycott over four years ago now.
The pre-match flag displays once again becoming part of the matchday routine, starting with the first post-takeover match against Spurs at St James’ Park in October 2021.
Then ahead of the first home match of the 2022/23 season, Wor Flags invited all fans to consider helping them with future flag displays by setting up a regular monthly donation to assist in funding them.
Wor Flags now informing Newcastle United fans about their next St James’ Park display.
Something a bit different planned for the Bournemouth match on Saturday.
Wor Flags message to Newcastle United fans via their social media:
“Tomorrow we’ll be supporting the SRTRC (Show Racism the Red Card) ‘First 11 Black Players’ project. This is a display that has been planned for a while now, and is more than a tribute to some great players from our club’s history, it’s also a mark of our support for the work of Show Racism the Red Card.’
SRTRC (Show Racism the Red Card) announcing on their official site: ‘Newcastle United FC’s First 11 Black Players, Following our successful pilot, we are back with the First 11 Black Players project, with our next exhibition ready for the public! This Saturday, SRtRC and Wor Flags will pay tribute to Newcastle United Football Club’s First 11 Black players during the Newcastle vs. Bournemouth fixture. Flags will be displayed in the stands, with the pop-up exhibition displayed in the Milburn Stand. What does it mean to be one of the first for Newcastle United? This project highlights the achievements of the first eleven footballers of Black heritage to represent the club at senior level in English football – from the early trailblazers who broke barriers to the icons who followed. The exhibition shares a simple message, diversity is the backbone of our successes – in football and in society. For players like Shaka Hislop, being one of the “first” meant showing incredible resilience in the face of racism and using their platform to change the game for future generations.’
