Munich Open Round-Up Quarterfinals | Ben Shelton edges Fonseca in three sets as Alexander Zverev recovers to defeat Cerundolo

The 2026 Munich Open quarter-finals set the semi-final line-up at the ATP 500 clay event, with Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, Alex Molčan and Flavio Cobolli advancing. The Munich Open quarter-final stage featured a mix of comeback wins and controlled straight-set performances, with Zverev overturning a set deficit and Molčan continuing his run from outside the seeded group.

With top seed Zverev still in contention and Shelton maintaining consistency from the top half, the draw remains structured but open. Molčan’s progression as a qualifier adds a disruptive element, while Cobolli’s straight-sets win positions him as a stable presence heading into the final stages.

Cobolli maintains control to dispatch Kopřiva

Flavio Cobolli def. Vít Kopřiva 6-3, 6-2

Flavio Cobolli secured his semi-final place with a straight-sets win over Vít Kopřiva, managing the match through consistent baseline patterns. The Italian established early control in rallies and converted break opportunities to build a 6-3 first set, despite having just 41% first serve. However, the Italian showed his greater experience in these types of situations, and from the exchanges he managed to impose his game to take the first set.

The second set moved further in Cobolli’s favour, with the Italian increasing return effectiveness and limiting errors in neutral exchanges. This time he raised his first serve percentage to 64%, which helped him dictate points on serve — saving the three break points he faced, while taking two breaks from six opportunities.

The Italian ultimately secured the victory 6-3, 6-2 in just one hour and 27 minutes and now advances to face Alexander Zverev, positioning himself as a stable opponent against the top seed in the semi-finals. Cobolli is now into his third semi-final of the season, with his best result being the ATP 500 Mexican Open title in February.

Zverev overturns Cerúndolo after second-set reset

Alexander Zverev def. Francisco Cerúndolo 5-7, 6-0, 6-2

Alexander Zverev advanced to the semi-finals after recovering from a set down against Francisco Cerúndolo. The match began with Cerúndolo taking advantage of fluctuations on Zverev’s serve, overturning a 4-1 deficit to claim the opening set 7-5. The early pattern showed longer rallies and effective return pressure from the Argentine, who took the lead against the local star.

The match shifted completely in the second set, where Zverev adjusted his baseline depth and reduced errors on first-strike patterns. He moved through the set without conceding a game, breaking repeatedly and shortening points to avoid extended exchanges. The German delivered a bagel in just 30 minutes, winning 69% of the points played in the set.

At the start of the third set, it seemed that Cerúndolo could still fight until the end, as he managed to hold serve again after a difficult second set. However, Sascha did not take long to move ahead. He secured the break in the third game and from there managed his service games to stay in front. Without major complications, the three-time Grand Slam finalist closed out the win against Cerúndolo after two hours and 15 minutes, winning 12 of the last 14 games played.

Shelton holds structure to edge Fonseca in three sets

Ben Shelton def. Joao Fonseca 6-3, 3-6, 6-3

Ben Shelton progressed to the semi-finals with a three-set win over Joao Fonseca, managing the match through controlled service patterns. It was perhaps the most anticipated match of the day, between a Shelton who has established himself as a consistent Top 10-level player over the past two years, while the development of Fonseca — just 19 years old — suggests he will soon reach that level.

The Brazilian is the player more comfortable on clay courts, but he was unable to impose his game in longer rallies against Shelton’s experience. The American secured a single break in the first set to take the lead, although the South American responded in the second — this time with a late break — to send the match into a decider.

Again, both players showed high consistency on serve, but it was Shelton who maintained greater efficiency. The 23-year-old secured a single break in the sixth game and held onto his serve to close out the win. He won an impressive 84% of first-serve points compared to 70% for Fonseca, which ultimately was not enough for the Brazilian to stay in the tournament. The result sends Shelton into the semi-finals against Alex Molčan, maintaining his consistency across the week.

Molčan continues run with straight-sets win over Shapovalov

Alex Molčan def. Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-4

Alex Molčan advanced to the semi-finals with a straight-sets win over Denis Shapovalov, maintaining his progression as the most disruptive player in the draw. The Slovak comes through qualifying and has defeated notable names on his way to the semi-finals — overcoming Alexander Bublik, Daniel Altmaier and Denis Shapovalov without dropping a set.

The world No. 166 has shown the level he can produce on clay courts, maintaining effective service games against an erratic Shapovalov. Molčan won up to 73% of service points, compared to also a high 75% for Shapovalov. However, the Canadian committed seven double faults and a total of 35 unforced errors — far above Molčan’s nine across the match.

In the first set, a mid-set break gave Molčan the advantage, which he protected through consistent service holds. In the second, the Slovak started with an early break and from there managed his service games to close out the win 6-4, 6-4. He advances to face Ben Shelton, extending his run from outside the seeded group into the semi-finals.
