Driver-inspired car chase game Samson coming to consoles this autumn
  • Samson’s console release confirmed for autumn 2026 in roadmap update
  • Upcoming updates set to bring bug fixes and new content

Released earlier this month, Samson is an open-world action game created by Liquid Swords, a studio comprised of former Avalanche Studios developers known for the Just Cause series and the Mad Max video game adaptation.

Set in the fictional city of Tyndalston during the 1990s, the game sees you play as getaway driver Samson McCray, who returns to the city after serving a prison sentence to clear his debts. Naturally, driving takes centre stage, resulting in gritty car chases featuring heavy vehicle handling in the vein of Driver. There’s even a dedicated downshift button to redline the revs.

With its lower budget and retail price, Samson had the potential to be a smaller-scale alternative to big-budget open-world games, harking back to titles like Sleeping Dogs.

Unfortunately, the game launched to negative reviews, with critics widely panning its numerous bugs and repetitive gameplay. It’s the modern-day equivalent of Driv3r.

After a rocky launch, the developer has revealed a roadmap detailing forthcoming updates, confirming that a console launch is planned for this autumn. This, though, will potentially put it close to Grand Theft Auto VI, which is slated for release in November.

Liquid Swords’ Founder and CCO Christofer Sundberg previously confirmed on social media that Samson is “running on consoles”, but the team didn’t have the “bandwidth” to develop it while prioritising the PC version.

“The game is running on consoles, but we don’t have the bandwidth right now to start the final development,” he wrote. “We have to go through the platform holder submissions and all that. Once the game is out on April 8, we’ll get cracking on the console versions.”

With a release window secured, development of the console version appears to have begun.

In the meantime, an update scheduled for next week is set to bring new car variants and damage tweaks, along with bug fixes and optimisation improvements.

Alongside the gameplay improvements, a “vehicle-focused content update” is planned for June.

Hopefully, Samson’s most glaring issues can be fixed in time for the console release later this year after the rough PC launch.
