Jayco-AlUla sports director reacts to Anders Foldager’s massive shock victory at the Brabantse Pijl
The transition from the rough cobblestones of Flanders to the steep, punchy climbs of the Ardennes always brings a unique atmosphere to the professional cycling calendar. The Brabantse Pijl perfectly bridges this gap, often serving as a brutal testing ground for the world’s best one-day specialists. However, instead of a heavy pre-race favorite taking the glory, this year’s edition delivered one of the most stunning upsets in recent memory.
Very few fans or analysts had Anders Foldager on their radar before the start, but the young Danish rider from Team Jayco AlUla delivered a flawless sprint to claim the absolute biggest victory of his life. While the wider cycling world was left completely shocked by the final result, his team directors insist they knew he was ready to do something special.
Team Jayco-AlUla sports director Valerio Piva explained that the victory was a fantastic bonus, even if they already knew the young Dane was carrying some excellent form into the week. “It is a nice surprise,” he told Sporza after the finish. “He has never won a race of this level. We expected something today. He was already fourth in the NXT Classic last week. He is in top form right now.”

A sudden change of plans out on the road

Interestingly, winning the race with Foldager was not the original strategy drawn up on the team bus that morning. Team Jayco-AlUla started the grueling one-day race with completely different tactical plans. The Australian squad initially looked toward Mauro Schmid to lead the charge over the endless succession of short and steep hills. However, that strategy had to be adjusted in the middle of the race.

“He was our second leader, behind Mauro Schmid,” Piva explained regarding the team tactics. “He did not feel one hundred percent to follow the breakaways. That is why we decided to go for the sprint. We waited and ultimately it delivers the victory. It is very nice for everyone. This will give him a boost of confidence.”

Foldager is currently riding his third season in the professional peloton. While he is still relatively unknown to the wider public, he is not entirely new to winning bike races. Two years ago, he opened his professional account by claiming a stage victory at the Tour of Slovakia. However, taking a prestigious spring classic like the Brabantse Pijl against a highly competitive field is a massive step up in both quality and difficulty.

“He is a young talent. It is his third year with us. Every year he takes steps. He is a fast and explosive rider,” Piva proudly stated. “He was waiting for the confirmation: a victory. This will perhaps change his life and career.”

Stepping up for an injured leader

This massive triumph is a huge relief for Team Jayco-AlUla, especially considering the recent setbacks they have faced during the spring classics campaign. The squad has been forced to navigate these crucial weeks without their star rider, Michael Matthews, who is currently sidelined due to injury. Despite missing their main captain, the younger riders have stepped up to fill the void.

“We miss Michael here, he was our leader. We do our best with the rest,” Piva noted about the current squad. “It is nice to stand on the podium with such a young guy. Our classic season is good. This will give motivation, but we keep our feet on the ground. That is a race of another level. First, we will enjoy this.”
