After an entertaining undercard, strewn with knockouts, it was time for Cristobal Lorente vs Nathaniel Collins 2. These two first met for Lorente’s European featherweight title last October, and after that entertaining draw, they now meet in a WBC featherweight eliminator, with Collins’ WBC silver featherweight title also up for grabs.
It was an intriguing opening three minutes, with Collins starting diligently. Lorente (21-0-3, 8 KOs) looked to punch long as he did in their first fight. In the second round, Collins (17-1-1, 8 KOs) showed even more that he is looking to box more patiently than in their first fight. The Scot found his range quickly, landing some smart left hands. Lorente had his moments in the second round, countering effectively.
Lorente had a better end to the third round, putting his punches together for the first time in the fight. The Spaniard began to exhibit the more effective work in rounds four and five, working well with his jab. It was advantage Nathaniel Collins in the sixth round, with the Scot landing a sharp, straight right, knocking Lorente down. The Spaniard came roaring back in the final minute of the round, firing everything at Collins, with the Scot looking uncomfortable and glad to hear the bell.
Lorente, despite being knocked down in the sixth round, recovered and worked well with his jab in the next two rounds, often outworking the Scot. In the ninth round, Collins had his moments, but the work rate and combinations from the Spaniard ensured he produced the better work in that round. As the fight reached the championship rounds, it felt like Lorente was in front. The Scot continued to have his moments, but Lorente worked effectively off his jab and continued to put his shots together well.
Roared on by the partisan crowd, Collins began to apply some pressure, but Lorente remained compact, dug in, and landed his own shots in the final three minutes. Cristobal Lorente vs Nathaniel Collins ultimately went to the scorecards, with one judge scoring it 116-111 for Collins, which is a staggering card. The remaining two cards read 115-112 for the Spaniard, who won the WBC final eliminator and became the WBC silver featherweight champion via a split decision.
Aston Brown vs Sam Gilley
It was Aston Brown (9-1, 4 KOs) vs Sam Gilley (19-2-1, 10 KOs) up next on the Cristobal Lorente vs Nathaniel Collins 2 fight card. Brown-Gilley was for the vacant WBA international middleweight championship.
It was a relatively quiet opening round, but Gilley settled the better, making Brown miss, while showcasing good hand speed. Gilley settled well, countering effectively, while tying Brown up on the inside throughout the first two rounds.
Over the next two rounds, Brown began to land some effective body shots, but Gilley still looked sharp, picking his punches on the back foot. In the fifth round, Gilley hurt Brown and quickly followed up, landing a right hand, knocking Brown down. Despite beating the count, Gilley pounced and landed a series of hurtful punches, forcing the referee to jump in and wave the fight off, awarding Gilley the fifth-round TKO victory. The body work from Gilley was brilliant, as was the variety in his work. What a win for Gilley, who is now the WBA international middleweight champion.
Royston Barney-Smith vs Conor McIntosh
Up next on the undercard was Royston Barney-Smith (16-0, 8 KOs) vs Conor McIntosh (10-3, 1 KO) for the vacant British and Commonwealth super featherweight titles.
Barney-Smith started with plenty of confidence, controlling the distance and punching long with speed and accuracy. McIntosh tried to fire back, but Barney-Smith looked sharp in the opening three minutes. A brutal body shot halfway through the second had McIntosh in trouble, and Smith smelled the finish, scoring three brutal knockdowns, leading the referee to wave the fight off after the third knockdown.
McIntosh showed a lot of bravery, beating the count after the first two knockdowns, but “Sugar Boy Roy” showed great poise, power, and a real vicious streak to stop McIntosh and become the British and Commonwealth super featherweight champion by TKO. Could Britain have just seen its next world champion?
John Joe Carrigan vs Harley Hodgetts
In the second fight of the Cristobal Lorente vs Nathaniel Collins 2 card, it was one of the most talented prospects in British boxing, John Joe Carrigan (3-0, 3 KOs), who faced Harley Hodgetts (5-7, 1 KO) in the middleweight division.
It was a fast start from Carrigan, showcasing how good he is at controlling the distance. Carrigan soon landed a left-right combination, flooring Hodgetts, who was unable to beat the count. Carrigan wins by first-round KO.
Dylan Arbuckle vs Nico Leivars
In the first fight of the night, it was Dylan Arbuckle (10-0, 4 KOs) taking on Nico Leivars (7-1-1, 1 KO) for the vacant British super bantamweight title.
It was an action-packed opening round, with Leivars applying the pressure on the front foot, but Arbuckle looked good off the back foot, picking his punches impressively. The second round began in the same vein, before Leivars’ pressure saw him take the second, landing some eye-catching shots.
Arbuckle began to look more settled in the fourth, before Leivars applied more pressure. Arbuckle did have some success in the fourth, but the pressure from Leivars was more than noticeable. While on his stool preparing for the fifth round, Leivars expressed to his corner that he was struggling with a cut, and his trainer, Grant Smith, pulled his man out, crowning the Scottish fighter the new British super bantamweight champion by TKO. We could well see a rematch in the future; it felt like the fight was really getting into a groove.
