Carey Price hasn’t suited up for an NHL game since the 2021–22 season because of lingering knee injuries that most around the hockey world assumed put an end to his soon-to-be Hall of Fame career.
While that certainly appears to be the case, it turns out Price actually came rather close to making a return for the Montreal Canadiens just last season. According to a fan on X (formerly Twitter) who met Price over the weekend, the six-time All-Star attempted a comeback to join the Canadiens for the stretch run in 2024–25, but ultimately his knee wasn’t able to handle it.
“Home from Moncton. Was amazing meeting Carey Price. Was crazy hearing his story about attempting a comeback to Habs last year as he felt great. But woke up next morning with knee pain. He misses the game and the Habs. But mentioned about being a goalie coach for MTL,”
The now 38-year-old Price’s eight-year, $84 million contract extension signed with the Canadiens back in 2017 just came to its end at the conclusion of the 2025–26 campaign. He will finish his career sporting a 361-261-79 record to go with a 2.51 goals-against average, a .917 save percentage, and 49 shutouts.
A Price return would have been pretty incredible to see, especially on an up-and-coming Habs team that was and is back to being in the playoffs in front of an electric Bell Centre crowd.
Moving forward, Montreal now hopes to have the next Price in goal, as he recently said young netminder Jacob Fowler reminded him most of himself. That’s a very high bar to live up to, but Price wouldn’t make that comparison lightly, and what we’ve seen from Fowler so far suggests the Canadiens may indeed have another star in goal for the foreseeable future.
