Green Bay Packers Make Expected Decision On Future Of Bo Melton As 2026 Off-season Program Begins

The Green Bay Packers have not exactly transformed their wide receiver room ahead of the 2026 NFL season, but they sure have made some significant changes. Last year, they selected wide receivers Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the 2025 NFL Draft, adding young talent to an already-deep position group. This room, of course, already included Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks (not to mention Malik Heath).

With so many established, experienced, and high-drafted pass catchers on the roster, the team made the decision to ask Bo Melton, one of the most popular players in the locker room, to do something drastic: switch positions.

Last year, Melton made the transition from wide receiver to cornerback. However, he did not play a single defensive snap in 2025 while appearing in 96 offensive plays (and 47% of Green Bay’s special teams plays).

Bo Melton will return to the Green Bay Packers in 2026

Green Bay Packers cornerback Bo Melton (16) catches a pass for a touchdown while being covered by Chicago Bears safety Jaquan Brisker (9) during the second quarter of their game Sunday, December 7, 2025 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

This off-season, the Packers have allowed Doubs to leave in free agency (he signed with the New England Patriots) and traded Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles. In doing so, they have created probable increased opportunities for Golden and Williams on the offense.

Indeed, Green Bay still has a rather deep wide receiver room, but as they have learned in past years, they cannot have nearly enough depth in case of injuries. Additionally, they have learned that it is imperative for them to have quality special teams players.

Therefore, they decided to tender a restricted free agent tender to Melton earlier this off-season. On Monday, it was reported that he signed it:

The significance of Melton signing this tender today is that it is the beginning of Green Bay’s voluntary off-season workouts. Multiple players with workout bonuses will be reporting to the team today to begin preparing for the upcoming season.

Melton is not going to have a big role on offense, nor will he have a significant role on defense, if any at all. However, he is one of their best special teams players and well-loved by his teammates. In terms of team morale, bringing him back is probably one of Green Bay’s better off-season moves.
