Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a big setback as young opener Ayush Mhatre is likely to miss around three weeks due to a hamstring injury during their recent IPL clash.
The 18-year-old picked up the injury in CSK’s 10-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. The incident happened early in the chase when Mhatre tried to push for a quick second run.
Injury scare during chase
Mhatre suddenly pulled up in pain during the fifth over and collapsed near the crease. He looked uncomfortable straight away, and team physio Tommy Simsek rushed in to check on him.
Despite the injury, Mhatre showed grit and continued batting for a short time. He scored a quick 30 off 13 balls, but his movement was clearly restricted.
After his dismissal, he had to be helped off the field, raising concerns in the CSK camp. Batting coach Mike Hussey later said the injury looked “pretty bad”.
The youngster is set to undergo scans in Mumbai on April 20. These tests will confirm the exact grade of the hamstring tear and give a clearer recovery timeline.
Big loss for CSK’s top order
Mhatre has been one of CSK’s best performers this season. He has scored 201 runs in six matches at a strike rate close to 178, giving the team strong starts.
He recently impressed with a 73 off 43 balls against Punjab Kings and a 59 off 36 against Delhi Capitals. His fearless approach made him the main attacking option in the Powerplay.
With captain Ruturaj Gaikwad still searching for consistency, Mhatre’s absence could hurt CSK’s balance at the top.
The team may now turn to options like Urvil Patel or Swastik Chikara as replacements. Both players are known for their aggressive style, but filling Mhatre’s role will not be easy.
For now, CSK will wait for scan results and hope their young opener recovers quickly.
