Rodri and Ruben Dias doubt for Burnley vs Man City clash

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that both Rodri and Ruben Dias are unlikely to be available for Manchester City‘s Premier League clash at Burnley on Wednesday, dealing a double injury blow to the side that sit three points behind Arsenal at the top of the table — with Rodri having limped off in the closing stages of City’s 2-1 win over the Gunners on Sunday.

Rodri’s groin issue is the more significant concern given its timing and context. The Ballon d’Or winner had only recently returned to consistent action after an 18-month absence, starting 19 of his last 23 appearances, and his influence on City’s surge back into the title race has been substantial. He was central to Sunday’s win over Arsenal, and Guardiola was candid about how much of City’s recent form has depended on his presence. “We cannot forget we have been 16/17 months without Rodri,” the manager said. “A huge, massive part depends on the players that you have.”

Asked specifically about the midfielder’s availability at his Tuesday press conference, Guardiola said: “I think for tomorrow, he will not be ready. We’ll see for the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton on Saturday or 12 days later for the Premier League game at Everton.”

Ruben Dias also sidelined as City’s defensive options thin

Ruben Dias has now missed four consecutive matches across all competitions since sustaining an ankle injury during the first half of City’s Champions League last-16 second leg defeat to Real Madrid on March 17, and Guardiola confirmed on Tuesday that the Portugal international remains “not yet ready” to return. In his absence, Abdukodir Khusanov and Marc Guehi are expected to continue at centre-back against Burnley, with John Stones — back from his own injury — and Nathan Ake available from the bench.

In midfield without Rodri, Guardiola may turn to Nico Gonzalez alongside Bernardo Silva, or deploy Nico O’Reilly in the middle to allow Rayan Ait-Nouri to cover at left-back. Either option represents a meaningful step down from the control Rodri provides in the engine room.

What this means for Arsenal and the title race

Arsenal currently lead the table and will have the opportunity to re-establish a three-point gap when they face Newcastle on Saturday — a gap that City reduced to nothing at the Etihad on Sunday before the two injuries emerged. The loss of Rodri in particular gives Arsenal hope that City’s momentum may be harder to sustain across what Guardiola himself described as a “so demanding” closing fixture list. “Both teams know they cannot lose or drop points,” the City manager said. “It will be difficult to recover, and our calendar is especially demanding.” Six games remain for both sides, and every point is now existential for the title race. Rodri’s fitness scan results over the next 48 hours may effectively determine who lifts the trophy in May.
