MS Dhoni Set for Comeback? CSK Drop Hint Just Before Facing MI in High-Stakes El Clasico

Chennai Super Kings have dropped strong hints that MS Dhoni could return for their big clash against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 on April 23 at the Wankhede Stadium.

The buzz around Dhoni’s comeback grew after CSK shared a practice video from Mumbai on April 21. The clip showed the veteran wicketkeeper moving sharply behind the stumps and pulling off a clean stumping.

CSK batting coach Michael Hussey also sounded positive. He said Dhoni is “progressing nicely” and batting well in the nets, raising hopes among fans.

Dhoni is said to be close to full fitness, but the final step is regaining full confidence in his running between the wickets. Quick singles and doubles remain the only concern before he returns to match action.

MS Dhoni’s Injury and Recovery

Dhoni has missed all of CSK’s matches in IPL 2026 due to a calf strain suffered just before the season began. The injury kept him out longer than expected.

Initially, CSK had planned a two-week recovery period. However, the rehab stretched into three weeks, with the team taking no risks with their senior player.

In recent days, Dhoni has focused on improving his speed and agility during training sessions. His presence at Wankhede could be special, as it is the same venue where he led India to the 2011 World Cup win.

Must-Win Clash for CSK

CSK are under serious pressure heading into this game. They have just two wins from six matches and are currently placed eighth on the points table.

To reach the safe mark of 16 points for playoffs, CSK now need to win at least six of their remaining eight matches. There is very little room for error.

Their Net Run Rate of -0.780 is another concern. Big wins are now important, not just victories, to stay in the race.

Interestingly, Mumbai Indians are also struggling near the bottom. This makes the April 23 clash a virtual knockout game for both teams.

A loss here could almost end playoff hopes for either side. That is why Dhoni’s possible return could not have come at a bigger moment for CSK.
