Madrid Open 2026 Day One Recap

Madrid Open 2026 Day One Recap

The opening day of the Madrid Open is rarely the main event these days, and 2026 followed that script. With all 32 seeds receiving byes in the expanded two-week Masters 1000 format, Day One of the Round of 128 was more about qualifiers, lucky losers, and lower-ranked players battling for a shot at the big names.

That doesn’t mean there weren’t a few noteworthy results. Dino Prizmic grabbed the standout win of the day by beating former finalist Matteo Berrettini in straight sets, while veterans like Marin Čilić reminded everyone they’ve still got a performance or two in the legs

For most, though, this was about survival, getting through and earning the right to face the seeds in round two. Full results and highlights below.

Match Recap

Dino Prizmic (Q) def. Matteo Berrettini 6-3 6-4

The biggest story of the day. The 20-year-old Croatian qualifier  delivered a high-quality, confident performance on Manolo Santana Stadium to beat the former World No. 6 and 2021 Madrid finalist.

Prizmic served brilliantly and earned just his second ATP Masters 1000 main-draw victory. He now faces in-form fourth seed Ben Shelton in the second round, a tough test after three matches in three days.

Marin Čilić def. Zizou Bergs 4-6 6-3 6-4

The veteran former World No. 3 and 2014 US Open champion rallied from a set down in a competitive match.

This was Čilić’s first Madrid win since 2022, and he sets up an intriguing next-round clash against rising 27th seed and NextGen star João Fonseca.

Thiago Tirante def. Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 6-4

A clean and convincing win by the Argentine over the Spanish veteran and home favourite. Tirante looked sharp and dominant throughout, and even a prime RBA was never really a factor on clay.

Tomás Machac def. Francisco Comesana 3-6 7-6(3) 6-3

Machac fought back well after dropping the first set. A solid three-set grind for the higher-ranked Czech, as Comesana had a decent serving day.

Rafael Jodar (WC) def. Jesper de Jong 2-6 7-5 6-4

A strong home debut for the 19-year-old Spanish wildcard. Jodar dropped the first set badly but showed excellent fighting spirit and mental toughness to rally and claim his first-ever win at the Mutua Madrid Open in front of a passionate crowd. He faces 5th seed Alex de Minaur next.
