While the New England Patriots prepare for the NFL Draft, they know head coach Mike Vrabel won’t be around for all of it. And ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith sent a brutally honest message to Vrabel amid the scandal, according to a post on X by Awful Announcing.
“Had he said nothing, it would have been far less incriminating than what it ends up looking like now,” Smith said. “
Patriots’ HC Mike Vrabel still dealing with fallout
Many people have speculated that Vrabel would get a pass and nothing would happen to him for this alleged discretion. However, the truth is playing out differently. Vrabel will undergo counseling and won’t be available to the Patriots for Day 3 of the NFL Draft.
And the Patriots have eight picks on Day 3. They have two fourth-round picks, one in the fifth, four in the sixth, and one more in the seventh. That’s a bunch of potential roster spots Vrabel won’t be available for input.
Smith said the Day 3 absence for Vrabel doesn’t add up.
“Why he’s going to be gone for Day 3, but he’s going to be there for days 1 and 2 makes no sense to me,” Smith said. “If you can be there for days 1 and 2, why can’t you be there for Day 3? And if you’re gonna be gone for Day 3, why be there for Day 1 and 2?”
And he said this hurts Dianna Russini’s side of things.
“In the end, it’s an unfortunate situation,” Smith said. “I think it definitely puts her in a very, very compromising position, unfortunately.
“I think he would have been better served shutting the hell up. Keeping his mouth shut and keeping his personal business to his personal stuff, and his family. But because he didn’t do that, I think he ended up incriminating himself and her even more.”
Vrabel said he needed to get his own house in order, according to ESPN.
“As I said the other day, I promised my family, this organization, and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can possibly give them,” Vrabel said.
