Jay Shah Uncovers Why Rahul Dravid Skipped Head Coach Reapplication

Rahul Dravid has stepped down as the head coach of Team India after their victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah explained that Dravid’s decision was due to family commitments, which he respected and did not press for an extension.

“Rahul bhai has served Indian cricket for the past five and half years. He was director of the National Cricket Academy for three years and then for the past two and half years, he served as head coach of Team India.”

“He told me that due to family commitments he wants to quit and we respect his decision. I didn’t forced him to extend.”

Dravid’s Tenure:
Dravid served Indian cricket for over five years, initially as the director of the National Cricket Academy for three years and subsequently as the head coach of Team India for the past two and a half years. He played a crucial role in taking the team to the 2023 ODI World Cup final and eventually leading them to the T20 World Cup 2024 title.

Future Plans:

Jay Shah mentioned that a new head coach would be appointed soon, with the appointment taking effect from the limited-overs series in Sri Lanka later in July. Although Shah did not disclose the names of the shortlisted candidates, media reports suggest Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman are the frontrunners. The selection process is being managed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which has already interviewed and shortlisted two candidates.

“Both coach and selector appointment will be made shortly. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but new coach will join from Sri Lanka series,” he said.

Implications:
The T20 World Cup victory marked the end of an era for Indian cricket, with key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announcing their retirement from T20Is, paving the way for younger talents. The new head coach will inherit a team in transition and will be expected to build on Dravid’s successful tenure.

The BCCI is expected to announce the new head coach and selectors soon after further discussions in Mumbai.
