Ranieri leaves Roma: official statement

Ranieri had a public dispute with coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who had previously complained about the club’s transfer activity and the management of some injured players.

Before a Serie A match against Pisa two weeks ago, Ranieri not only said that Gasperini had approved all transfers completed by the club, but also that he was the fourth option for the job last summer, after the top three targets had turned down Roma’s offer.

As the relationship between Ranieri and Gasperini deteriorated, the Roma owners had to choose between the two to move forward.

“As we look to the future, our direction is clear. The club is strong, with solid leadership and a defined vision,” the club continued.

“AS Roma will always come first.

“We have full confidence in the path ahead under Gian Piero Gasperini, with the shared objective of growing, improving, and delivering results worthy of our history.”

Ranieri was appointed as Roma’s Senior Advisor last summer, after ending a six-month spell as the team’s head coach.

According to reports in Italy, Roma sporting director Frederic Massara is now likely to step down, paving the way for Francesco Totti’s potential return to the club.
