Good morning, readers, and welcome to Friday Statwatch.
If you ever heard a TV or radio advertisement selling financial products, you’ll always hear a disclaimer: “Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.” The same is true with sports. Sure, we have seen field hockey and lacrosse players who have made Division I and U.S. senior national teams after amassing awesome scores over the course of their high-school careers.
In that spirit, let’s take a dive into the top single-season scorers that we’ve amassed in the columns to the right of this space (or the bottom, if you are on a phone or tablet).
The top scorer, Mileena Cotter, is playing a semifinal game today in the ACC Tournament for Syracuse. She has played in every one of the Orange’s games this season.
Fran Frieri, who holds three of the top 10 single-season goal-scoring performances, is a senior at Notre Dame. The Irish, who lost an ACC quarterfinal yesterday could make the NCAA Tournament as an at-large depending on conference tournament play next week (as of this writing, the team is rated 27th in Ratings Percentage Index, one of the key metrics). Also on that Notre Dame roster is Emma Murphy, who had consecutive 173- and 174-goal seasons a few years ago.
Caroline Ling, who appears twice in the all-time Top 10, is on a Rutgers team which lost last Wednesday to Johns Hopkins in the Big Ten Tournament. The Scarlet Knights, ranked 59th in RPI despite a 10-win season, is likely not playing again this season. The same might be said for an East Carolina team featuring 160-goal scorer Sophia Apple. The Pirates need a win over Charlotte tomorrow in order to pull to a .500 conference record as well as a .500 overall record. ECU would need a lot to break their way in the next day or so — the next week or so — to make the Division I field.
A little lower in the single-season list is Vanni Intini, who had a 158-goal sophomore season at Fayetteville (N.C.) Academy. She is attending the school which holds the current Division I title, the University of North Carolina, but, according to social media, she is a double-major in psychology and neuroscience.
Lacrosse players, it seems, do great things at the next level.
Below in the red letters are our usual provisional gathering of American scholastic lacrosse statistics from available published sources, including MaxPreps, Berks Game Day, the KHSAA, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, PhillyLacrosse, and Advance Media. If we can get more teams, state federations, and local leagues to adopt the easy-to-use MaxPreps.com platform, we can aim for as complete a statistical picture of the country as possible.
