Day Three at the Mutua Madrid Open brought more action and a couple of real surprises in the Round of 64.
The biggest stories were a pair of big upsets and strong home-crowd moments, while the tennis world also received disappointing news about Carlos Alcaraz.
The 19-year-old Spanish wildcard Rafael Jodar produced the standout home performance, dismantling fifth seed Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-1 for his first Top 10 win.
Meanwhile, qualifier Dino Prizmic continued his impressive run by beating fourth seed Ben Shelton in a three-hour thriller.
On the negative side, World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz announced he will miss both Rome and Roland Garros due to a wrist injury. Here are the notable results from Day 3:

Match Recap

(Q) Dino Prizmic def. (4) Ben Shelton 6-4 6-7(4) 7-6(5)
The biggest shock of the day and arguably the biggest win of Prizmic’s career so far. The 20-year-old Croatian qualifier battled for over three hours in a high-quality thriller to take down the in-form World No. 6.
Prizmic stayed solid under pressure (didn’t face a single break point) and won a tight final-set tiebreak. He now faces Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the third round and has already beaten Berrettini and Shelton this week.
Vít Kopřiva def. (9) Andrey Rublev 6-3 6-4
A solid straight-sets upset by the Czech. Kopřiva looked sharp and efficient against the 2024 Madrid champion. I said in my draft that Rublev could either dominate or disappear quickly, and it was the latter.
(1) Jannik Sinner def. Benjamin Bonzi (Q) 6-7(6) 6-1 6-4
The World No. 1 had to work harder than expected. He dropped the first set in a tight tiebreak but bounced back strongly after a slow start (and some physical concerns). Sinner extended his Masters 1000 winning streak and will next face qualifier Elmer Møller.
(6) Lorenzo Musetti def. Hubert Hurkacz 6-4 7-6(4)
A good win for the Italian on clay as he continues his return to form. Musetti showed variety and control to beat the big-serving Pole.
(21) Arthur Fils def. Ignacio Buse 6-7(4) 7-6(3) 7-5
The recent Barcelona champion battled through a tough three-setter to keep his winning streak alive.
Emilio Nava def. (14) Valentin Vacherot 6-7(5) 7-6(1) 6-3
Impressive comeback win for the American, who fought back from a set down against the seeded player.
Rafael Jodar (WC) def. (5) Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-1
The biggest home story of the day as the 19-year-old Spanish wildcard produced a dominant, confident performance to crush the fifth seed in straight sets for his first-ever Top 10 win. Jodar barely put a foot wrong on the big stage and now advances to face João Fonseca (who got a walkover over Čilić). Huge momentum for the young Spaniard.
(19) Cameron Norrie def. Tomás Machac 6-2 6-7(8) 7-6(5)
A gritty three-set battle. Norrie dominated the first set, lost a tight second-set tiebreak, then edged a dramatic final-set tiebreak to advance and prove yet again he’s difficult to beat on all surfaces.
