What is Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag – Resynced about?
The setting and story of the original remain unchanged, but for those who didn’t play it back then: Black Flag is set in the Caribbean during the “Golden Age” of piracy in the early 18th century.
As the young Edward Kenway, you’ve left England (and your wife Caroline) to raid ships and plunder treasure alongside historically documented buccaneers like Blackbeard.
As the story unfolds, you find yourself caught between the Assassins and the Templars, encounter mysterious artifacts, and fight for the future of your pirate companions.

Key Gameplay Information
The core gameplay elements of Black Flag will remain unchanged in Resynced. Specifically:
- On your ship, the Jackdaw, you’ll sail freely across the Caribbean Ocean, choosing to follow the story missions or tackle open-world activities.
- You can engage other ships in naval battles, unleash a full broadside, launch boarding maneuvers, and then slash your way across the enemy deck.
- On land, Black Flag becomes a classic Assassin’s Creed. You sneak through tall grass and use parkour maneuvers to climb roofs and trees.
- In close combat, you draw sabers, blades, and pistols to counter enemy maneuvers.
- Away from the open Caribbean, there are three major settlements: Havana, Kingston, and the pirate stronghold of Nassau.
What’s new in the Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remake?
Resynced was redeveloped from the ground up using the latest version of Ubisoft’s Anvil Engine. So we’re not talking about a remaster here, but a complete remake. We mention this explicitly because, much like Metal Gear Solid Delta, the new edition mirrors many settings and scenes from the original almost one-to-one—butwith completely new graphics.
Black Flag – Resynced preserves all the story moments from the original, so you won’t encounter any major changes to the plot. There are a few additions, though:
- Resynced includesseveral completely new story chapters, including side quests featuring Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, and Edwards’ wife Caroline appears more frequently.
- Joining Adéwalé arethree new officers, whom you can recruit in new side missions. These new colleagues, in turn, unlock new ship upgrades, such as enhanced broadside fire.
- Resynced gets aproper stealth systemwith manual crouching. In the original, there was only tall grass.
- Theinfamous tailing missions are simplified: As soon as someone spots you, Edward draws his saber and you can complete the mission by force of arms.
- Thecombat system is overhauled. Back then, you just had to hammer the counter button; the new combat system focuses on additional maneuvers and skills.
- Your crew’s songbook will be expanded to include varioussea shantiesin addition to the classics from back then.
- The modern-day story is set to … change. Ubisoft mentions new “Rifts,” new Edward-centric sequences that move away from the original’s focus on exploring Abstergo Industries. It remains unclear exactly what this means.
- And the most important new feature: You can nowrecruit a monkey and a catfor your ship.
Will the original voice actors return?
We don’t yet know the German cast for Black Flag – Resynced, but at least on the English side, we know thatMatt Ryan(Constantine) is returning as Edward Kenway. We’ll let you know about the other voice actors as soon as we have more information.
