Jerry Lawler Admits Taz Was Upset Over Jokes About Him Being Small on Commentary

Jerry Lawler is looking back at his time behind the mic—and he’s admitting not everything he said landed the right way.

This comes from his appearance on the Not Sam podcast, where Lawler reflected on his commentary style during WWE’s peak eras. Known for pushing boundaries, Lawler acknowledged that some of his remarks—especially when aimed at other wrestlers—crossed the line and created real tension. He explained that while the goal was always to connect with the audience, some of the things he said ended up being taken more personally than intended.

“I just—I tried to remember some of the things that I said about those guys, but I sort of went over the line on some of the stuff. I haven’t—I mean, some of the guys in the business still thought I hated them.”

Jerry Lawler then pointed to one specific moment involving Taz, recalling how his on-air comments about Taz’s size didn’t sit well at the time as the Human Suplex Machine didn’t like the jokes.

“I’ll never forget when Taz came in on their thing, and me and Vince were doing commentary, and I said, ‘Whoa, this is Taz—this guy’s…’ I don’t know, I made some jokes about him being small. And he didn’t like it—no, he never liked it.”

Despite that reaction, Lawler said the situation didn’t turn into lasting heat, and the two were ultimately able to move past it.

“But we got along fine. It was just—I just went after the real stuff that the people at home could relate to, and it all worked out well.”

Lawler’s comments just show how commentary used to operate—where pushing limits was part of the job, even if it sometimes blurred the line between entertainment and personal shots. Looking back now, Lawler isn’t denying what happened—he’s owning it.
