Rafael Jodar is the hottest young player in the ATP World Tour right now. He just beat Joao Fonseca in Madrid and is on his way to the top 20. The 19 year old is shooting up the rankings and showing flashes of being a formidable threat and challenger to thwart the Alcaraz/Sinner duopoly.
In a shocking turn of events, tennis establishment mouthpiece Mark Petchey is not happy about Jodar’s sensational rise, he said on X: “Should be a fineable offence to say this is the future of tennis. The guys at the top are going to be around for the next decade and some change.”
How does Petchey know Sinner and Carlos will be dominating for the next decade? Why is protecting Sinner and Alcaraz? How could it possible be a bad thing for Sinner and Alcaraz to be threatened by a younger and potentially better champion, just like Federer and Nadal were eventually conquered by Djokovic? Didn’t it produce the greatest tennis we ever saw and the two best rivalries of the modern era?
It feels like Petchey is pushing the establishment agenda: Carlos and Sinner have been carefully installed and must not be threatened by a new Djokovic threat. It’s actually quite sad to see the establishment unhappy about Jodar’s spectacular brilliance. Because you have to wonder what moves and manipulations could be made in private to protect the Sinner Alcaraz empire from Jodar who is clearly not welcome to crash the ATP elite party. Maybe it’s a Nike vs Adidas thing. Maybe the long term business scripts have already been written.
For Petchey to downplay and discredit and throw cold water on the Jodar phenomenon makes zero sense from a sporting standpoint. The more superstars in the ATP the better it is for everyone. Tennis is at a point that the Sinner vs Alcaraz rivalry has been a disappointment. Yes the quality of tennis is great to see but the rivalry lacks tension, grudge and simmering hostility. Sinner is simply too boring and scripted and never says anything remotely interesting.
It’s wonderful that Jodar is emerging as the next Djokovic to potentially ruin the Sinner Alcaraz domination era. This is trilling to imagine how it may play out. Jodar is big and strong with a pleasant personality and charm but he ain’t here to subserviently defer to the establishment. Jodar is here to conquer and that is what this sport needs, a young, ferocious, relentless tiger eager to shake up the balance of power.
Jodar is 17-8 in his first 25 ATP matches, that’s better than Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Sinner and Carlos. This kid is creating tennis magic. Imagine what he will be doing with two or three years of Tour experience.
If Mark Petchey and his masters try to impede in any way, shape or form what Jodar is doing organically, it will go down as one of the worst errors in tennis history.
