Sports Minister Kofi Adams reveals why Ghana will host U-20 AFCON – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that Ghana has secured the right to host the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking on Asempa FM on Tuesday, the Buem Member of Parliament said the country won the bid without financial cost, crediting the development to the influence of President John Mahama and Ghana’s standing in African football circles.

“We have won the bid to host the U-20 AFCON tournament next year, and we did not spend a penny. We leverage on the credibility of the President, John Mahama and the entire country,” he stated.

Kofi Adams explained that the decision also aligns with national plans to mark Ghana’s 70th anniversary next year, describing the tournament as a strategic opportunity to amplify the celebrations.

“The reason is that next year, the government turns 70 years old, and we want to use that and leverage it as a country,” he added, expressing optimism that the tournament will help position Ghana as a leading centre for football talent development on the continent.

Beyond its symbolic value, the hosting rights are expected to boost football development, improve sports infrastructure, and stimulate local economic activity.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to collaborate closely with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and a yet-to-be-formed Local Organising Committee (LOC) to ensure smooth preparations. Key focus areas will include infrastructure readiness, logistics, security, and fan experience.

The tournament is widely seen as further reinforcement of Ghana’s status as one of Africa’s traditional football strongholds.
