Three Welsh rugby clubs have completed an unbeaten league season, and there’s still some others who could achieve the feat
It’s some achievement to go through a season undefeated.
Three clubs in Wales’ rugby pyramid have already managed that feat this season. Another four could soon join them in the coming days.
So who are the magnificent seven that just couldn’t be beaten in the league this year?
Well, starting with the clubs who have completed all their fixtures, Mold won 16 from 16 in Division North 2 this season.
The first of our ‘Invincibles’ had some hefty wins under their belts this campaign.
Having started the season with a 48-0 triumph over Dinbych – they would beat the same opposition 60-24 later in the season – they then followed it up with some other sizable victories.
Abergele were beaten 90-3 and 81-7, Bro Ffestiniog were hammered 48-0 and Dolgellau were trounced 54-10. Mold then rounded out their league campaign with a 64-5 win away to Machynlleth.
Unfortunately, their unbeaten run didn’t extend to the cup – with Dolgellau gaining some measure of revenge to edge past them in the North Wales Division 2 Cup semi-final.
Out west, Carmarthen Athletic also won all 16 of their fixtures in Division 2 West.
Like Mold, there were some huge scorelines for Carmarthen – including a 101-12 win over Whitland back in March. They sealed their invincible status with a 10-try victory away to Fishguard on the weekend.
Unfortunately, their cup hopes were ended last October – losing to Neath Athletic in the second round of the WRU Division 2 Cup.
The other club to have already secured their invincible tag is also out west, with Pontyberem having won all 16 of their Division 4 West A matches.
The club averaged over 50 points a game this season, with their season bookended with one-sided victories over Llanybydder. They started the season with a 104-3 victory, before ending it with a 72-7 triumph.
Pontyberem also reached the quarter-final of the WRU Division 4 Cup, bowing out to Tonyrefail back in January.
Four other clubs could yet go unbeaten in their respective leagues.
Gwernyfed have already won 17 from 17 in Division 3 East. The Powys club travel to Garndiffaith on Friday night for their final match of the season.
In the WRU Division 3 Cup, they were beaten in the second round by eventual champions New Dock Stars.
In Division 5 East, Bargoed Athletic have two more matches left to play this week – but boast a 100 per cent record from their 11 matches to date.
They’ll take on Blackwood Stars on Wednesday evening before hosting Hartridge on Saturday.
Bargoed also reached the final of the Division 5 Cup final at the Principality Stadium earlier this month, but were beaten convincingly by Brecon Athletic.
Another club with two left to play are Llangadog.
They’ve won all 16 matches to date in Division 4 West B. To cap off an invincible season, they’ll need to navigate a trip to Pontyates on Wednesday before welcoming Cefneithin to Llangadog on Saturday.
Like Bargoed, Llangadog were also beaten finalists at the Principality Stadium – losing the Division 4 Cup final against Pontyclun.
The final team bidding for an unbeaten season are Beddau Athletic.
With just one game left to play in Division 6 East Central, victory away to Whitchurch on Saturday would make it 12 wins from 12 for them.
