The Detroit Lions are picking up running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ fifth-year option, but are declining linebacker Jack Campbell’s option, a league source confirmed to The Athletic.
With a May 1 deadline to pick up fifth-year options, the Lions had some decisions to make — as GM Brad Holmes noted on the final day of the 2026 NFL Draft. He said the Lions were still having discussions on how to handle the options of their star 2023 first-round picks, but they have since reached a conclusion before the deadline.
As things currently stand, Gibbs will make $14.3 million in 2027, which will be tied for the fifth-highest amount among RBs. The Lions are still hoping to work out a long-term extension with Gibbs, though, and the option could be folded into the new deal as it was for offensive tackle Penei Sewell and edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. The 2023 12th overall pick has been to three Pro Bowls in three seasons and has totaled 5,029 scrimmage yards and 49 touchdowns in his career, as one of the most electric skill players in the league.
The Lions’ decision not to pick up Campbell’s fifth-year option doesn’t come as a surprise. Unlike the running back position, which is more clear-cut, the linebacker figures are a bit complicated, because off-ball linebackers are grouped with edge rushers when it comes to fifth-year options. With a Pro Bowl appearance under Campbell’s belt, his fifth-year option was scheduled for $21.9 million. That would have made him the highest-paid off-ball linebacker in NFL history, with a heavy cap hit to boot.
It’s possible Campbell still becomes the NFL’s highest-paid linebacker, just on terms that are more favorable for both parties. The expectation is that the Lions and Campbell will agree to terms on a contract extension before he hits free agency in 2027 — perhaps even before the 2026 season begins.
The Lions view him as a pillar of the organization as he enters Year 4 in Detroit, and he could be named a team captain for the first time in 2026. Campbell was named a first-team All-Pro in 2025.
“I’m putting my eggs in the basket of Jack Campbell in the linebacker room,” Dan Campbell said at the NFL league meetings in March. “Like, it’s time.”
