Rafael Jodar (WC) def. Vít Kopřiva 7-5 6-0

The 19-year-old Spanish wildcard continued his breakout run in front of the home crowd by reaching his first Masters 1000 quarter-final.

Jodar had to work hard in a tight first set, but once he broke for 7-5, he completely took over. He cruised through the second set with a bagel, losing just five games in total in a very impressive 80-minute performance.

Jodar saved both break points he faced and overpowered Kopřiva with strong baseline hitting. This is now 12 wins from his last 13 matches. He will face Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals tomorrow.

Casper Ruud def. Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-7(4) 7-6(2) 7-6(3)

A proper three-set thriller as Ruud saved two match points when serving at 3-5 in the deciding set, then fought back to win the final tiebreak 7-3.

The defending champion showed excellent mental resilience after being on the brink of defeat and failing to convert several earlier break-point chances.

The match lasted nearly three hours and featured several momentum shifts, but it was Ruud who improved his head-to-head against Tsitsipas to 4-2. The important thing for the Greek is that he continues this vein of form and keeps winning back-to-back matches both in Rome and Paris.

Jannik Sinner def. Cameron Norrie 6-2 7-5

The World No. 1 delivered a very professional performance in the morning, taking just 87 minutes to advance.

Sinner dominated the first set and looked in total control, though he had a brief lapse in the second set when he let a 3-2 lead slip with a loose service game. He quickly refocused, broke back when Norrie served at 5-5, and closed out the match comfortably.

Alexander Blockx def. (16) Francisco Cerúndolo 7-6(8) 6-2

The 20-year-old Belgian qualifier continued his remarkable run with another impressive upset. Blockx edged a very tight first set in a long tiebreak (winning 7-8 after saving multiple set points), then completely took over in the second set, winning it 6-2 with confident, aggressive tennis. This is Blockx’s second Top 20 win in Madrid (after beating Auger-Aliassime), and he reaches his first Masters 1000 quarter-final. A huge breakthrough week for the young Belgian.

(10) Flavio Cobolli def. (7) Daniil Medvedev 6-3 5-7 6-4

A big upset on paper, and Cobolli is proving to be a bit of a clay court force this season. The Italian took the first set comfortably, lost a tight second set, but regrouped well in the decider. He broke decisively in the ninth game of the third set and served it out to win in just over two hours.

(2) Alexander Zverev def. (23) Jakub Menšík 6-4 6-7(4) 6-3

Zverev had to work hard to reach his first Madrid quarter-final since 2021. He took the first set with a solid break early on, but Menšík fought back strongly to win the second-set tiebreak. The Czech even broke for a 2-1 lead in the third set with a spectacular forehand volley.

However, Zverev stayed calm and took advantage of a Mensik lapse in concentration, immediately broke back and then won five of the last six games to close out the match in 2 hours and 19 minutes. Zverev served very well with 81% first-serve points won, and he’ll face Flavio Cobolli next, looking to avenge his Munich loss.
