First Tennis Memory: Going with my mom (Marla) to her lessons, I was just hitting on the wall. I was three or four.
Tennis Inspirations: Definitely my parents (dad, Myron), they’re the reason why I started playing. They obviously sacrificed a lot for me to be able to pursue it. And even still, to this day. If it wasn’t for them, I don’t think I’d be playing tennis. Growing up my favorites were Agassi and Roddick. As an American, that’s pretty standard.
First Famous Player You Met Or Encountered: Let’s see… I grew up playing at the club where they have the Dallas Challenger. From about age ten I was a ballkid. I remember Amir Delic, Robert Kendrick, Rajeev Ram, Ryan Sweeting.
Last Book Read: What was it… I go through phases when I read a lot then I don’t read much at all. I think it was the Nike Shoe Dog book by Phil Knight. (Note: I gave Mitchell a copy of my book “The Sarasota Open Experience” available at amazon for $9.99!)
Greatest Career Moment: Probably qualifying at Australian Open and playing Djokovic on Laver (2019). It’s hard to beat that experience. Also qualifying for the first time at a (Grand) Slam at US Open (2018) with all my family there. Being an American, qualifying there was definitely one.
Most Painful Career Moment: Probably losing at US Open second round to Lehecka in 2024. I was up two sets and a break. Losing 7-5 in the fifth. Obviously another great experience I can look back fondly on. That was one of the toughest losses I’ve had. To make third round of a Slam doesn’t come around very often. Obviously put myself in a good position but didn’t get over the line.
Strangest Match: You probably know what I’m going to say… I played Frances (Tiafoe) actually here at Sarasota Open. It was when there were some disturbances in the apartment across the pond. It was viral I think. I haven’t checked in years… I think there were multiple videos of it… tens of millions of views of these videos [smiles]. And I still will have someone approach me about it. It’s probably hard to get much crazier than that [smiles].
Funny Tennis Memory: That same memory is pretty funny. Trying to think of something else. It’s hard in the moment to think something is funny. You look back on things… I’m super competitive. When I look back, I feel there’s not a lot of laughs and stuff. I would say that one. One of the few matches I played where you feel it took over the match. Forgot there was even a match happening.
Why Do You Love Tennis: I love playing. I love competing. Obviously, I’ve been playing tennis for almost thirty years now. It is my life. It’s brought me a lot of things that I don’t think I would have had if I didn’t play tennis. Just being able to compete, day in and day out, week in, week out. And just the life experiences… I don’t think I’d take anything away.
Funniest Players Encountered: Pretty much any of the American guys. I feel like it’s a lot of jokes. Reilly is one I can point to who is always cracking jokes. All of those guys. I’m a little older. So I can remember when he was coming up – Taylor, Tommy, Frances. When they get together, it’s pretty chaotic [smiles].
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Strawberry.
Favorite Artist: I like Post Malone. Luke Combs.
People Qualities Most Admired: Kindness. Honesty. High character. Things like that are easy to tell the first time you meet a person, if someone is genuine.
