David Benavidez reacts to Canelo attending Zurdo Ramirez fight

David Benavidez believes Canelo Alvarez is coming to see how he looks against Zurdo Ramirez on Saturday.

Canelo has long been accused of avoiding a bout with Benavidez and has consistently distanced himself from a potential clash with him.

Alvarez is set to be in attendance at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday to support stablemate Jaime Munguia, who challenges WBA super middleweight world champion, Armando Resendiz on the card.

However, Benavidez believes the Mexican great is in fact coming to see how he fares in his cruiserweight debut against Zurdo.

“It’s a big event,” the 29-year-old told reporters on Wednesday.

“You can tell the magnitude of the event, because Canelo didn’t even go to Jaime Munguia’s last fight.

“He’s saying he’s [coming] for Munguia.

“He’s not coming to see Munguia, he’s coming to see me up close and personal.

“Whether it’s to scout for a next fight, I don’t know, but you see how everything plays itself out.

“I went to his fights, now he’s coming to my fights.

“I don’t need to say nothing else.”

It will be the first time in six years that Alvarez hasn’t fought on Cinco De Mayo weekend, with his return from defeat to Terence Crawford likely to be on September 12 in Riyadh.

The 35-year-old has been sidelined after undergoing elbow surgery.

Benavidez challenges Zurdo for his unified WBA and WBO cruiserweight world titles, live on DAZN and Amazon Prime pay-per-view.

‘The Mexican Monster’ remains the WBC light heavyweight world champion and defended his title for the first time with a seventh round stoppage over Anthony Yarde in Riyadh in November.

The Arizona native will become a three-weight world champion if he defeats Ramirez, but has vowed to return to light heavyweight afterwards to face Dmitry Bivol in an undisputed title showdown.

“My plan wasn’t just to abandon the light heavyweight division,” he said on The Ariel Helwani Show.

“My plan was [to] come up, grab two titles, come back down and make this fight with me and Bivol even bigger.

“My dream is to become unified champion.

“It’s smart for me to come back down.”
