Opening Segment for May 1 WWE SmackDown Revealed

Cody Rhodes is kicking things off on SmackDown tonight, and it comes right after the chaos that followed Randy Orton’s brutal punt attack last week.

WWE confirmed Friday morning that the Undisputed WWE Champion will open the May 1 episode of SmackDown, putting the spotlight squarely on Rhodes following the fallout from WrestleMania and the violent attack that left fans wondering what happens next. WWE teased the segment by pointing directly at the unresolved tension surrounding Orton and what could be coming for Rhodes next.

“After addressing Randy Orton’s vicious punt attack and the aftermath of WrestleMania last week, what will be the next challenge facing the Undisputed WWE Champion?”

Rhodes opening the show signals that WWE is keeping the focus on the growing situation with Orton, especially after the punt attack that shook up the title picture. With tensions still high following WrestleMania, fans are expecting answers — and possibly the next major challenge to step forward. WWE also made it clear that Rhodes won’t just be appearing — he’ll be setting the tone for the entire night.

“The American Nightmare kicks off SmackDown tonight. Experience all the action on SmackDown, Friday at 8 ET/7 CT on USA.”

Along with Cody Rhodes opening the show, SmackDown will also feature the in-ring debut of Ricky Saints, adding another moment to watch as the roster continues to evolve after WrestleMania.

Charlotte Flair is also scheduled for singles action against Jacy Jayne, giving the women’s division another major spotlight match as rivalries continue to build.

Current WWE SmackDown lineup for May 1:
