Liverpool will hope to take a huge step towards qualification for next season’s Champions League when they visit Manchester United on Sunday.

Arne Slot’s side cruised to the Premier League title last season but have performed well below par for much of this term, and currently sit fourth in the top flight standings.

With the Premier League set to be given five qualification spots for the Champions League, though, the Reds look set to qualify for the competition.

Ahead of their visit to Old Trafford, it has emerged that the two sides are both chasing a defender from a struggling Premier League rival.

As per CaughtOffside, both Liverpool and Man United are keeping tabs on Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven.

The report claims that the two clubs are both monitoring the Dutch defender, who is part of a Spurs side that have struggled all season and occupy the final relegation spot with just four games remaining in the Premier League.

Van de Ven, 25, joined the Lilywhites from German side Wolfsburg in 2023 and has since played more than 92 times for the north London side across all competitions.

It is claimed, though, that the Dutchman is aware of interest from elsewhere ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

Despite this, the centre-back has not yet made a decision on his future and will not do so before the end of the season, the report says, with the player’s focus solely on keeping Tottenham in the Premier League.

The Netherlands international is set for talks with his current employers after the season has finished, regardless of which division Spurs are in.

The central defender’s contract with Spurs is set to run until the end of the 2028/29 season.
