Today’s Big 12 women’s lacrosse title game was supposed to have begun at 11:30 a.m., but because of weather systems moving through northern Florida, the game between Florida and Colorado ended shortly before 5 p.m.
There was also an incident in the final minute of regulation which extended the game — for want of one second.
On the play, Florida, playing three outfielders short because of caution cards, managed to cause a turnover as Colorado was seeking to advance into the final third of the pitch.
The Gators called for a timeout; and it appeared that one second came off the clock between the horn from the scorer’s table and the actual stoppage of time.
The teams met to discuss strategy for the next phase of play. The officials had their own committee meeting at the pitchside VAR monitor.
The teams broke their huddles, but the game officials kept on meeting. And meeting. For 6 minutes and 26 seconds.
This season has been one of marathon replay reviews. There was an extreme situation a few days ago between Longwood and Radford when a last-second goal was reviewed for roughly 20 minutes.
And it seems to me that the replay situations are getting longer and longer, and less and less efficient. To have a replay review of the clock go that long, to me, is unacceptable.
Just play. These committee meetings are making a mockery of the sport.
