The Los Angeles Chargers enter OTAs and minicamp with newcomers via the NFL Draft. General manager Joe Hortiz promised Justin Herbert some long-awaited help for the Chargers’ franchise quarterback. Yet LA might not be done adding to the roster, following a future high-profile meeting with a former Cleveland Browns tight end.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport revealed David Njoku is visiting the team on Monday. Njoku remains on the open NFL Free Agency market with training camps still two months away.
The longtime Browns tight end is among the best talents still available. He carved out one Pro Bowl appearance in 2023 with the Browns. The 6-foot-4 target played nine seasons in Cleveland and collected 384 receptions, 4,062 yards and scored 34 touchdowns.
Njoku announced in February that his Cleveland run was coming to an end. He called his time “a beautiful journey” while expressing his gratitude towards the ownership, front office, coaches and now former teammates.
He delivered stout production despite catching from multiple quarterbacks throughout his career. That includes the six different ones who lined up behind center during the Browns’ last postseason run of 2023.
Njoku’s visit comes amid another crucial future move Hortiz must make. The GM must address the future of past first round selection Quentin Johnston, who’s up for an extension amid his rookie deal. LA already picked up his fifth-year option after the draft. Johnston endured a rough rookie season before the arrival of Jim Harbaugh as head coach. He’s since produced consecutive eight-touchdown seasons with Harbaugh throwing him the ball.
