Lindsays Scottish 5k gold double for Cambuslang
Fiona Matheson has set a new W65 British Best over 5k, just a week after she set the British Best over 10k.
The Falkirk Victoria Harriers athlete clocked 18:58 to surpass the previous best of 19:53.
Fiona’s achievements always draw warm appreciation from the community and her remarkable story began more than 20 years via her local jogscotland group.
‘Two in a week, I’m delighted at that!,’ said Fiona after the Lindsays Scottish 5k Champs at Silverknowes.
‘Over the last two years I’ve been trying to train for turning this ‘old’ age of 65 and I’ve been introducing a lot more things into my training routine,
‘I’ve been doing a bit of swimming as well as the pilates, I’ve been doing strength work as well. I’m not really a fan of that, but I still do it.’
On how it feels to be inspiring others in the sport she added: ‘That is what I’d like to be known for, to inspire other people, because if I can do it at my age, what can people be capable of if they’re willing to put in the work and it is such a great hobby to have.’

On how she stays so motivated she said:
‘I am because I enjoy it so much, I enjoy events like this.
‘Look at it tonight, the number of people out here, the spectators, it’s such a good feeling,
‘I’ve got my grandkids here tonight and it’s nice for them to come along and watch their gran and grandpa running.”
Fiona’s journey in the sport began as mum in her 40s when she initially started running through our jogscotland programme.
‘I started in jogscotland around 25 years ago, so quite a long time ago, and I’m just so grateful.
‘Running is my wellbeing, and I’ve met so many great people through this, and it’s my hobby and it’s the people I meet, I just enjoy it so much.’
