Mwamba clinch historic Kenya Cup 5-peat with victory over Quins

Mwamba RFC Ladies completed a historic Kenya Cup Women’s five-peat in style, beating Kenya Harlequin 30-20 in the final played at the Goan Institute on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

The Kulabu ladies came into the clash on the back of four consecutive title wins and were determined to make it five in a row, a feat they sealed after a hard-fought 80 minutes.

Mwamba took 19 minutes to break the deadlock, with Edith Nariaka crossing over for the opening try, though Sinaida Mokaya missed the conversion.

Speedster Janet Okello then doubled Mwamba’s lead, but Mokaya was again unable to add the extras. Mwamba were dealt a setback shortly after, losing Laureen Akoth to the sin bin for 10 minutes following a yellow card.

Yvette Aketch responded for Quins, scoring off an advantage, before Milka Chitechi slotted in a penalty to narrow the gap to 10-8, with Mwamba still in front.

Kenya international Sheila Chajira then gave Quins the lead heading into the break, dotting down for an unconverted try to hand her side a three-point cushion.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

In the second half, Mwamba returned a more determined side. Rose Otieno restored their lead before Irene Apiyo extended it with a second consecutive try.

Nariaka then chased down a kick to grab her second try of the match, stretching the score to 25-13. Ann Namunyak added Mwamba’s fifth try to push the lead to 30-13.

Chajira would have the final say for Quins with a late try, but it proved too little, too late as Mwamba sealed a famous 30-20 victory to secure their fifth straight Kenya Cup Women’s title.
