Dodgers face an old friend as they try to avoid a sweep in St. Louis – Dodgers Digest

The Dodgers (20-13) did not get their offense on track last night, as they were shut out through eight innings and put together a little rally just to get our hopes up in the ninth. They had the tying run on second, but Dalton Rushing struck out for the Dodgers’ fourth consecutive loss. They squandered a bare minimum quality start from Roki Sasaki, who battled through two shutout innings before allowing three runs in the third. It looked like another ugly start for Sasaki, but he retired 10 in a row to get through six innings to keep the Dodgers in the game. The offense didn’t hold up their end of the bargain, and now they’re facing their first sweep of the season. Fortunately for the Dodgers, the entire NL West has been struggling so they’re still in first in the division.

Impressive, really.

Justin Wrobleski gets the ball coming off a career-high 109 pitches against the Cubs. Wrobo did struggle with his efficiency in needing 109 pitches to get through six innings, but he shut the Cubs out and allowed four hits and struck out a season-high six batters. He did also walk four, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch, but stranded nine batters in those six innings to tightrope his way to a shutout. May allowed three runs in four innings in his season debut against the Guardians, but has allowed two runs in 26 innings over his other four starts for a 1.50 ERA on the season. It’ll be interesting to see how long he can keep this up, as he’s finding success despite the third-lowest strikeout rate (12.6 percent) among pitchers with 30 innings pitched and a 13.2 percent whiff rate, which is one of the worst in baseball. Wrobleski started in St. Louis last June and struggled a bit, allowing four runs in six innings.

The Dodgers get their first look at Dustin May, who pitched in 65 games across six years for the Dodgers before being traded to Boston at the Trade Deadline last season. Despite the midseason trade, May finished third in innings pitched for the Dodgers last season (104), but was about to lose his rotation spot and was sent to Boston for James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard (lol). May pitched in six games for Boston and posted a 5.40 ERA before signing with the Cardinals this offseason. May’s Cardinals career got off to a really rough start, allowing 13 runs and 17 hits over 7 1/3 innings against the Rays and Tigers. In his last four starts, May’s been excellent with a 1.93 ERA. He’s allowed five runs over his last four starts and completed six innings in three of those. The Cardinals have won each of his last four starts and haven’t allowed more than three runs in any of those, which doesn’t bode well for a Dodger offense that hasn’t scored more than two runs in a game during this four-game skid.

A relatively normal lineup for the Dodgers today. The only real change is that Rushing is behind the plate with Will Smith getting the day game after a night game off.

Chad didn’t get this in his emergency thread last night, but Brusdar Graterol started a rehab assignment yesterday.

This came out of nowhere, but Graterol threw a clean inning last night for OKC in his first game action since Game 5 of the 2024 World Series. I’d expect a lengthy rehab, but still a pleasant surprise for him to be back in action.

First pitch is scheduled for 11:15 AM PT and will be on SportsNet LA.
