Louisville basketball has landed another big talent to bolster its frontcourt. Obinna Ekezie Jr. has committed to play for Pat Kelsey’s Cardinals next season.
BYU, Arkansas, Michigan, UCLA, and Houston all had interest in landing the commitment of the five-star talent. But Louisville succeeded in securing the signing of Ekezie, who is reclassifying from the 2027 class to the 2026 class.

Ekezie was one of the top-ranked prospects in the class of 2027, but announced on Sunday that he was reclassifying to 2026 and joining the Cardinals. The college basketball world reacted to the news on social media, and there was plenty of praise for the job Kelsey has done to bolster the Louisville roster this offseason.
College basketball insider Jeff Goodman posted the news of Ekezie’s commitment to Louisville and noted how Kelsey has put together a strong roster for next season.
“Louisville has landed one of the best big man available in Obinna Ekezie Jr., and he intends to reclassify and play for the Cardinals this season. The 7-1 Ekezie was the No. 2 ranked player in the country in the Class of 2027, per On3,” he wrote on X.

“He’s a skilled big man who can step out and can play alongside Kansas transfer Flory Bidunga at times. Pat Kelsey has now assembled a team that should be ranked among the top teams in the country heading into the season. He added Bidunga and Okezie with Iowa transfer Alvaro Folgueiras (Iowa) and Karter Knox (Arkansas). Adrian Wooley will return and the Cardinals also add guards Jackson Shelstad (Oregon) and De’Shayne Montgomery (Dayton),” he added.

College recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw shared his belief that Ekezie has all the tools to become a vital player for Louisville after reclassifying his comment to 2026.
“Louisville just landed a MAJOR piece. Obinna Ekezie Jr was a top-5 prospect in 2027. Now he is reclassifying to 2026 and could be the best big in the class. Size. Tools. Upside,” he wrote.

Sports journalist Eric Crawford also hailed Ekezie’s commitment as “big” for the Cardinals.

A Louisville sports talk show reveled in Louisville landing Ekezie’s commitment amid interest from other programs.

Another UofL talk show page was ecstatic after Kelsey landed Ekezie’s commitment amid competition from Kentucky and Mark Pope.

Kentucky sports analyst Matt Jones shared his belief that the Wildcats’ rivals, Louisville, will have a strong roster next season.
“Louisville gets another one. They have had a huge offseason and will have one of the best rosters in America,” he wrote.

The arrival of Ekezie follows the signings of Flory Bidunga, Jackson Shelstad, and Karter Knox on the transfer portal. Louisville finished sixth in the ACC last season with a 24-11 overall record. The Cardinals were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
