WWE Explains Tongan Death Grip After Jacob Fatu Uses It On Roman Reigns

The May 4, 2026, episode of WWE RAW didn’t just build up the feud between Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu; it also focused more on the Tongan Death Grip, as it was presented as more than just a move.

The move goes back many years to WWE Hall of Famer Haku, also known as Meng in WCW. This move became his signature. Unlike normal holds, it relies on a precise grip, which makes it feel very real and dangerous.

What makes it even more interesting today is its family connection. WWE RAW commentary explained that this move isn’t something you just learn; it’s passed down through generations. Since Jacob Fatu is part of the extended Anoa’i family and linked to the same Tongan roots, using this move connects him directly to that legacy.

Fatu has only started using the Tongan Death Grip after WrestleMania 42. So far, he has used it against Solo Sikoa, Talla Tonga, and Roman Reigns.

During this week’s RAW, commentators Michael Cole and Corey Graves made Tongan Death Grip feel special and dangerous. Cole explained the dangers associated with the move, saying it targets the throat and cuts off airflow, making opponents pass out quickly. It was made to feel less like a wrestling move and more like something used to end fights instantly.

“It’s a rare move, but it’s fabled in WWE…It was made famous by Jacob Fatu’s uncle, Haku. It causes nerve issues because the attack goes to the Adam’s apple. It forces the breath to be cut off…and eventually, you will pass out,” Cole said.

Fatu used the Tongan Death Grip on Reigns, not once but twice so far. Each time, Reigns struggled to breathe and looked completely shaken. Reigns has called out Fatu for being disrespectful about the move as well.

By highlighting the move so much, WWE made it feel like a central point in the ongoing Bloodline feud.
