MS Dhoni remains out of action as Chennai Super Kings take on Delhi Capitals on May 5 in Delhi. The veteran has not travelled with the squad and is continuing rehab in Chennai.
Dhoni is still recovering from a calf strain that first occurred in a pre-season practice game. The injury got worse in mid-April, forcing him to sit out multiple matches during the season.
The match is being played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, but Dhoni has stayed back to focus on regaining full fitness. Team sources say his skills are match-ready, but running between the wickets remains a concern.
Fitness Remains the Key Hurdle
The main issue for Dhoni is his “running intensity”. While he can bat and keep wickets, the team wants him to be fully comfortable taking quick singles and twos before returning to competitive action.
Bowling coach Eric Simmons made it clear that the final call lies with Dhoni. He said the wicketkeeper’s fitness status is “way above my pay grade”, hinting that Dhoni himself will decide when he is ready.
Head coach Stephen Fleming had earlier confirmed a minor setback during training. Since then, the team has chosen to be extra careful to avoid any serious or career-threatening damage.
There is still no confirmed date for Dhoni’s comeback, even though he has resumed light net sessions and is slowly increasing his running speed.
CSK Coping Well Without their Leader
Despite missing their most experienced player, CSK have managed to stay competitive. The team is currently sixth on the points table after winning three of their last five matches.
Sanju Samson has stepped up as the main wicketkeeper-batter. He has scored 315 runs in nine matches, including two centuries, giving stability to the batting lineup.
Batting coach Mike Hussey also revealed that Dhoni has intentionally stayed away from some games. The idea is to avoid unnecessary attention and keep the team focused during a crucial phase of the tournament.
For now, CSK continue their campaign without Dhoni, while fans wait for clarity on when the legendary captain will return to the field.
