Sumter, SC – For the third time in the past four seasons, Hillsborough Community College is on top of the NJCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championships.
The Hawks were a dominant operation all week at the Palmetto Tennis Center in order to fulfill their quest for back-to-back titles. Led by reigning ITA Regional Champion and ITA Cup National Singles Champion Younsoo Cho, Hillsborough swept every match in the Division I singles and doubles matches, accounting for nine total individual champions this week. They closed the championships with a comfortable 13-point edge (45) over runner-up Cowley (32).
Hillsborough boasted plenty of returning talent, as five sophomores were crowned singles champions in Cho, Salomea Jasiczek, Sydney Stark, Noah Rojas and Aisulu Zholbolat. Freshman Emily Lederer delivered another win for the Hawks on Court Six.
The Hawks’ dominance didn’t slow up there, as the pairs of Cho/Sydney Stark (No. 1), Rojas/Zholbolat (No. 2) and Jasiczek/Lederer (No. 3) all prevailed in the doubles finals.
Cowley Community College enjoyed an impressive showing in Sumter, as four individuals earned runner-up finishes in the singles draws via No. 2 Cynthia Wanjala, No. 4 Chiho Takada, No. 5 Lisa Takamura and No. 6 Kendra Arsotegui. The pairing of Wanjala/Naghely Garcia were finalists in the No. 1 doubles final, as well.
Rounding out the top five in the team standings was third-place Collin (23), followed by St. Petersburg (20.5) and Barton (19).
