May 7, 2026 — Five on the watchlist, but one to watch

Yesterday, the Tewaaraton Awards issued their list of five finalists for the award for the most outstanding female player in collegiate lacrosse.

There are names you know, including three members of the U.S. senior women’s national team.

But there’s one player in the five nominees who I think you should keep an eye on. And she’s part of a national team of a different kind.

Here, for your consideration, is an Instagram video of Alyssa Chung of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Chung is a sophomore at the Naval Academy, and is throwing in goals with the power of Charlotte North and the imagination of Dana Dobbie. In the three games leading into tomorrow’s first-round NCAA Division I game against Massachusetts, she scored 16 times, part of her 72-goal haul this season.

She’s one of a long line of great players who has come out of Severna Park (Md.), and will likely be joining a different team when she finishes her studies in 2028, as she will graduate as a commissioned’s naval officer.

I hope, no matter where her military career takes her, that she is able to stay in the game of lacrosse. I’d like to see what she will be able to do at the next level.
