The day of judgement is drawing ever closer: the young British talent is eager for a future with the Prancing Horse. In Maranello, developments around the SF-26 are not the only concern at the moment. In fact, as summer approaches, the driver market is also starting to heat up, and it is time for Ferrari to make an important decision. Charles Leclerc will remain in red for the next season as well, but the second seat could still hold some surprises.
Oliver Bearman, a Haas driver and member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, feels ready for a bigger challenge, and his early performances in the 2026 season seem to confirm that belief. However, for obvious reasons, the decision is far from simple. On the other side of the garage stands a certain Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 World Champion. The Scuderia must therefore take a crucial decision within the next few months, because the future of the team could depend heavily on this choice.
Ferrari 2027 – better experience or youth?
The crossroads facing Maranello is the following: is it better to continue with a legend like Hamilton, even if his results are no longer at their absolute peak, or to invest in a young rising star? On one hand, the seven-time world champion is clearly approaching the final phase of his career, but it is still not the time to close that chapter. Lewis remains motivated, trains consistently, and still has strong belief in the team.
On the other hand, the desire to perform is not enough if the results do not follow. The 2026 season has started much better than the previous year, but one constant remains: Leclerc is still ahead. Ferrari may benefit from having a legend in the garage, but it is not necessarily what the team needs most right now. Experience is already provided by the Monegasque driver, who has been with the team for seven years. What Ferrari does not need is simply another experienced presence, as seen in the transition between Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton. What is needed instead is a fresh, young and different energy.
The last time Ferrari welcomed a very young driver into the team was in 2019 with Leclerc, then considered the great promise of the moment. Seven years later, it is fair to say that decision proved to be more than justified. The driver with car number #16 has given everything to the team; the world titles have not arrived, but not because of the driver himself. Lewis will almost certainly be capable of winning a race this year if the car allows it, but a single victory per season is not what Ferrari needs. What the Scuderia needs is a young project driver to build its future around.
Ferrari 2027 – why Bearman is the right choice
In 2024, Bearman wrote a significant “love letter” to Ferrari fans. At the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah, he had to step in to replace Carlos Sainz, who underwent emergency appendicitis surgery. On that occasion, the rookie impressed everyone within Ferrari with his adaptability and composure. He finished his very first Formula 1 race in seventh position, on one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar.
Furthermore, despite the enormous pressure on his shoulders, Ollie managed the situation perfectly. Strong emotions did not get the better of him, and it became the perfect calling card for a potential future in red.
This is what the team needs: beyond a competitive car, of course, Ferrari needs two drivers capable of building its future. Despite his incredible achievements and his history, Hamilton cannot realistically be the long-term solution for the team’s future direction. Maranello cannot afford to let the young British driver slip away, because Bearman has talent, determination, and is ready. Opportunities like this do not come often.
This does not mean that Lewis Hamilton is at the end of his career cycle; on the contrary, at his age he still shows strong competitiveness. However, that is not necessarily what Ferrari needs for a true rebuild. What the Scuderia requires is a young driver capable of shaping a new era.
