Match Report: 1st XV 75 v 33 Cambridge

Ampthill closed off their season in style as they turned on the afterburners in a commanding 75-33 win over Cambridge Rugby at the Olney Field.

The hosts had a chance to make it five wins from six in the final block of fixtures and would be confident with the visitors yet to win a game this season.

A cagey start saw both sides trade points, fine finishes from Oscar Wilson and Sione Va’enuku, followed by a conversion from Finn Keylock, put the mob 12-up before two for the visitors drew the game level.

The game looked to have both sides going in level at the interval before a bit of magic saw Va’enuku collect a chip and score his second and the Mobs’ third of the afternoon, Keylock adding the extras to take the hosts in ahead at the break.

Unlike the first half, the second would provide much more attacking entertainment, four tries in five minutes saw the home side stretch away from their opponents. Seb Smith, Efan Jones, and two from Joe Heslop all dotting down with Keylock nailing all three conversions extended the hosts’ lead to 47-12.

Despite conceding four in quick succession, Cambridge continued to remain resilient and were rewarded with two further scores, confirming their bonus point for the afternoon.

Yet again, the sides would trade points, Luke Davidson scoring under the posts after a crazy melee left the pitch and defence scattered, followed by another score for the visitors from a lineout.

An impressive set of block four games had seen plenty of tries for the Mob, and the hosts rounded off the season in style as they added a further three tries to cap off a second half of entertaining rugby.

A third for Heslop confirmed his hat-trick and the man of the match award before Louis Grimoldby and Rory Morgan both also got in on the act as they wrapped up their time at Ampthill with two fine scores under the posts, 75-33.

Man of the Match, Joe Heslop, spoke after the game on both his season and the win over Cambridge on the final day of the Elior Champ season.

He said: “It’s been really good, I’ve really enjoyed it, especially the back end of the season, I got plenty of opportunities and the boys have done really well.

“It was a great game, fun in the sun, it was fast, free-flowing rugby, luckily I got on the end of three of them.”
