A rubber match between two of the best teams in the NL (and MLB) on Mother’s Day didn’t go as planned. The Dodgers failed to take advantage of the few chances they did get, and the Braves took advantage of extra shots at Justin Wrobleski to post a crooked number in a 7-2 loss.
======
The day started ideally and looking differently for Justin Wrobleski, as he got a six-pitch inning that included a strikeout with a 97 MPH fastball.

After another strikeout to start the 2nd, the wheel started to come off. A lead-off single was followed by a bunt single to put a pair on, and another single from Eli White followed to score the game’s first run.

However, Wrobo rebounded by inducing a comebacker that seemed destined to end the inning on a double play, but instead he threw wildly and Alex Freeland had to make a great play to just get one.

A four-pitch walk to the nine-hole hitter loaded the bases and was costly when Mauricio Dubon yanked a slider down the line in left for a three-run double to make it 4-0 Braves.

Wrobo followed that up by retiring the next 16 Braves hitters in a row before surrendering a lead-off single to start the 8th. However, he quickly saw that erased by a double play, which was good timing since Drake Baldwin followed by homering. That’s the first homer Wrobo has given up this year and made it 5-0 Braves.

Wrobo continued in the 9th, where he gave up a homer to Matt Olson as well to make it 6-2 (more on that “2” later).

He then got two outs, but then hit a batter with two strikes and that was it for him: 8.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 1 BB (1 HBP), 7 K, 100 Pitches.
It’s hard to complain about starts like this, where he’s giving up solo shots in the last couple innings where he’s only in to save the pen, and the only reason a crooked number is up on the board is because he failed to field his own position.
Anyway, Wyatt Mills entered to make his Dodgers debut, giving up two singles to tack another run onto Wrobo’s ledger but eventually getting the final out. 7-2 Braves.

On the other end was Bryce Elder, and unfortunately he looked similar to Wrobo without the throwing boner. He gave up a two-out single and walk in the 1st, then retired 15 Dodgers hitters in a row into the 6th inning.
It looked like he was about the Maddux them, but he randomly lost control with two down in that inning. Back-to-back-to-back walks to Freddie Freeman, Andy Pages, and Kyle Tucker loaded things up, and that was it for Elder.
Robert Suarez entered and went full against Max Muncy, who obliterated a ball at 107 MPH to right … caught for an out via a ridiculous Eli White catch smashing his face into the wall to keep the zero on the board.

Baseball, amirite?
Suarez issued a walk and another reached on a catcher’s interference in the 7th, but nothing came of that chance either.
Tyler Kinley entered for the 8th and got the first two batters, but then walked Kyle Tucker and Max Muncy finally hit a ball nobody could catch for his 10th homer of the year to cut things to 5-2.

Raisel Iglesias finished the game off in the 9th.

24-16 on the year.
The Dodgers will remain at home for a four-game series with the scuffling Giants, though that rarely seems to matter in terms of the series result. It’ll start at 4:10 PM HT/7:10 PM PT/10:10 PM ET with Roki Sasaki likely taking the ball after being pushed back, and he’ll face the recently called up Trevor McDonald.
