Adrian Peterson to be inducted into Minnesota Vikings’ Ring of Honor

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings will induct legendary running back Adrian Peterson into the team’s Ring of Honor during the 2026 season, the team announced Monday. Peterson, a seven-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro, will join fellow running backs and past honorees Chuck Foreman and Bill Brown.

“From the moment we selected Adrian in the 2007 NFL Draft, he proved to be a transformational player for the Minnesota Vikings,” owner and president Mark Wilf said in a statement. “His historic 2012 MVP season will be rightfully remembered by fans, but Adrian’s consistent production over 10 seasons in Minnesota is what firmly established him as an all-time Viking and one of the greatest to ever play this game.”

The franchise surprised Peterson with the news last week. The 41-year-old had initially been invited to speak to the team’s rookies, but fellow Vikings legend John Randle shared the news with Peterson in a private moment.

The Vikings selected Peterson with the seventh pick in the 2007 draft. He played with the team for 10 seasons, accumulated 11,747 rushing yards and 97 touchdowns — the most ever by a Vikings running back. In 2012, Peterson’s 2,097 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns led to him becoming the third Vikings player to be named the NFL’s MVP.

“Adrian was an electric player who captivated fans when the ball was in his hands,” owner and chairman Zygi Wilf said. “His infectious energy and his appreciation for Vikings fans and the team’s role within the community made him even more memorable.”

Peterson’s history includes several off-field incidents and legal issues. The NFL suspended him in 2014 after he was charged with felony child abuse; he eventually pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless assault, paid a fine and served probation.

In April of last year, he was arrested in Minneapolis for driving while intoxicated. Last October, police arrested him for DWI and unlawfully carrying a weapon when he was discovered asleep in his SUV at a suburban Houston gas station. In both cases, he was released after posting bond.

Peterson is the 29th inductee into the Vikings’ Ring of Honor. He will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2027.
